Are Hitachis still a good choice for hardware RAID now that they've been taken over by WD? I'm just wondering if the TLER nonsense has permiated down to the current set of Hitachi drives? I'm half looking at some of the new 4TB ones.

I had a similar issue with one of my MV8s - the solution (for me), was to update to the latest firmware for the MV8, and then it all started working.

Well, after some more digging, it looks like Dell released a new version of the firmware that DOES allow 3rd party drives to be used - they just haven't updated their documentation yet...
Firmware Update.
There are some releases after this version, but this is the release that removed the...
I am guessing that it won't work. Check out section 3.4 on page 13 of the guide.
So I am guessing that the drives will show up in the RAID manager, but show as being blocked, and won't let you use them.
What Dell are pushing is Near Line SAS drives (at $550 for a 2TB as opposed to $100...
If you check out the table on Page 6 of The PERC technical guidebook it says that the H700 supports SAS and SATA drives, but the H800 supports SAS only. I've also seen that mentioned in a couple of other places too.
I've got a call in with our Dell storage guy, since I'm looking to spec up a...
One additional question - if I want to chain a 2nd port from my HBA to a 2nd enclosure with a SAS expander, can I connect the chaining cable to the external port, or do I need to bring the external cable to a backplane connection, then convert that to an internal cable and connect to port 8...
Just an update with my SAS Expander issue - recap, I'm using a SASLP-MV8, and it wouldn't see any of the drives connected to it, and was giving misc timeout issues.
After much sweating, cable swapping, and numerous pieces of electrical tape and red nail polish...
The issue wasn't with pin...
Yup... I've taped pin A11 (on the non component side of the board), and the light is flashing quite happily - it was solid before. However, I am still having some issues.
My HBA is a SASLP-MV8, case is a Norco 4220. When I connect the top 2 rows of disks to the MV8, they are all recognised...
I've just plugged in my expander card, and can't see any of the disks attached to it. I've connected it to my SASMV8LP using ones of the short cables I used initially to connect the SASMVLP8 to the backplane - are these the right cables to use, or is there some funky crossover cable that I need...
I'm interested in one of these too... As others have said, it would be nice for it to be dual purpose... One as a mount in a disk box, and one to add into a case with a motherboard so we don't have to worry about motherboard issues with the expander.

I'm looking to get one of these cards, and want to make sure that I get the right cables to hook it up to my 4220. Are these the correct cables? Are there any other sources of cables, since 20 inches seems to be a little on the short side?
