    You can't use the on-board external ESATA port as it isn't a multiplier.     samsung hd204ui incredibly slow write speed

    Bench your internal disk not the hd204ui. Then bench the samsung using CrystalDiskinfo and run HD Tune against it. Btw are you copying over the lan or from one partition to another? I have the same drives and my own transfer are around 90MB/s over the lan. Those speeds are 10/100 speeds.
