You are right... that does sound potentially problematic. Having to use it in landscape wouldn't be the biggest deal, but still...
Googling about the relative heat output doesn't bring up much beyond the U3011 supposedly being cooler than the 3008WFP (being very hot to start with).
Does...
Just looking at the pictures of the U3011, the vents are in various places on the back, none of them are on the side that would touch the table in portrait mode.
I don't see how it wouldn't be able to to cool itself just as well in portrait mode?
What is this convection cooling you speak of? Googling for it doesn't bring up anything, in fact it brings up this thread :)
The U3011's native res is 2560x1600, so why would 4x3 be 1600x1200? There's a QXGA res at 2048x1536 or 2048x1600, are you saying those will not be available for some...
Hmmm... 24 + 30 + 24 would possibly the best setup for eyefinity (the 24's being permanent peripheral vision), but for code... it means always sitting to the side. I'll probably go for such setups once I have space for an L-shaped desk.
In the catalyst driver you mean the "enable gpu scaling" + "maintain aspect ratio" option? For some reason, "maintain aspect ratio" is greyed out, even when I have a non-native resolution & aspect ratio set. I had to use the monitor OSD to achieve 4:3 1200x1600 on my 1200x1920 screen.
If this...
I am considering getting an U3011, but I need to know that it is capable of doing a non-stretched 4:3 mode, such as QXGA 2048x1536 or 2048x1600.
The monitor has 4:3 and 1:1 scaling modes, so that should not be a problem, the question is whether such resolution will be available in the control...
You got me there :)
I totally agree when it comes to FPS games, I can picture those being fantastic on eyefinity. Except I hardly ever play those anymore.
Definitely prefer a single monitor for that. And gaming is not my #1 worry, I want a monitor optimized for the 80% of time I am not...
One further weirdass solution would be to use a U3011 in portrait mode, but switch it to 4:3 (or 1:1) scaling such that a 4:3 resolution sits in the middle of the screen with unused screen portions at the top and bottom.
It sounds like a waste of such a nice monitor, but 25 vertical inches is...
I guess having 3 portrait monitors solves the focus problem, since you'd always have whatever requires the most attention on the middle screen.
Thing is, while good for coding, for games I really do not care for eyefinity. I do not like the black borders in my vision, and also I mostly play...
Thanks :)
30" 16:10 amounts to 25.44" x 15.9", to be exact (I put 16 in the table for clarity). 27" 16:9 is 23.54" x 13.22", but I'd be using that one in portrait mode most of the time (I consider 30" too big to use in portrait mode, I guess :).
I guess the above post is a case of tl;dr for everyone :)
I am trying to make a very informed buying decision, I can't really summarize it in less words :(
I'm trying to figure out the best pick for my next monitor upgrade.
I am realizing that what I find most important is vertical space. I spend about 80% of my time coding (usually a single source code file at once), web browsing and other documents. The other 20% (later at night) I play games...
