    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

So, after waiting for 2 months for my mobo to be fixxed and returned (they even lost it in mail!) I will finally receive the fixxed mobo this week. Any new tips/advice u guys can think of, since we are 2 months further now?

    Yet Another ESXi FreeNAS build

Makes sense yes. Nice build! You're the same guy from the freenas forums right? Supermicro is gonna either send me a new board or repair it after all. Looking forward to your updates!

    Yet Another ESXi FreeNAS build

Why not use the LSI2308 for your storage pool? U can flash the LSI2308 to IT-mode. My setup is almost the same Im planning to use a SSD to store my VM's on and I will passthrough my 6x3TB RAIDZ2 to ZFSguru using the LSI2308. A additional M1015 is not needed.

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Received the first hardware. Now waiting for CPU/RAM. Concerning snapshots (VM & ZFS), can I save these on the zfs pool itself?

which model of Video Card can suited for ESXi5.1

I have a HD6750 in my current HTPC and I will be building a new ESXi server soon. If i can use the HD6750 with a XBMC VM (Windows 8), that would be awesome. Does it pass through video and audio over HDMI? Does DXVA work? Found in some other thread ur using 2GB ram. Are u able to set more RAM...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Roughly it costs about €1700 (i'm from EU). So basically that's $2300. Nice, i'm really looking forward to this all. Still need to make a few decisions. FreeNAS or ZFSGuru. XBMC or Plex. What VM's are you running? Are you running the latest ESXi? (5.5) Maybe I am going to try to get gpu...

Still reading mixed statements whether to use ZIL/L2ARC or not! Thanks for all the input here, very helpful forum! Will do some more reading here and there.. Bout the case: I cannot really find a white case that fits my needs, eventually the R4 will be my best choice. Lian-Li recently released...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Maybe it wasn't smart indeed. But I instantly fell in love with this case since it's design is so sleek and it matches my living room. Now doubting if i should sell the case, go for a bigger case (I prefer white, so it matches my furniture). With a larger case, in stead of 4 drives, i can do a...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Totally agree, but yes, i'm not planning to store critical data. It's a home setup after all. Still doubting about the RAIDZ setup alot! Still thinking bout going for the WD green. Very silent and little power consuming. TLER is not needed since i will flash the LSI 2308 to IT mode (non raid)...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Hmm, interesting. Need to do some more research. Making decisions can be really hard ha! Nice that u work for VMWare. I'm a system engineer and we have VMWare environment also. We are running 5.1 atm. Reason I want to build a homelab is that I want to learn new stuff bout VMWare and I would...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

I'm also new with ZFS, but what i've read is that ZFS + TLER is a no go. Check this thread for more info (search for TLER). 4x4TB gives me ~7,3TB storage in RAIDZ2 and I think is the best option. I agree that having 2 drives as a "spare" is a bit of a waste of space (and money), but I still...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Well actually I will only store media on the disks. What raid setup is best u think? Basically all it will do is host my mediafiles and stream them to my other PC that will run either XBMC or a Plex client. I'm having the same debate like you. Reading mixed reviews on newegg about the red's too...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Thanks! Yes i'm planning to use the 2308 (will flash to IT mode), and will use 4 disks and direct it to a VM in VT-d mode. Not sure what OS im going to use (probably FreeNAS since it has a Plex plugin now). Will use a SSD as VM container. Will use the 2nd SSD for ZIL/L2ARC. I still have a few...

    Critique my ESXi Haswell build

Received my case yesterday and I can store 5 3.5" drives max. The case isn't really hdd friendly, but it fits 5 harddisks (and 2 SSD). Doubting if i should buy 4x3TB or 4x4TB. (want to go for RAIDZ2 after reading the following article). Placing a 5th hdd at the top of the case isn't really...
