Of course even the 12.7 drivers are not perfect, they still have some issues in more complex setups like triple cards running eyefinity, etc. But they are a huge improvement, and they are pretty much perfect for a single card solution. Indeed AMD should not have messed up this badly with the...
The 7970 is a beast. Should be a better choice for high resolution gaming too. The only issue with the 7900 series has been drivers but AMD has finally seemed to fix that with the 12.7 drivers.
Go 7950.
Advantages:
Cheaper
Proper 384 bit wide memory interface
3 GB VRAM
Very good OC headroom, will match an OCed 670
Destroys 670 and 680 at compute performance
Handles high resolutions and high AA better than 670
Disadvantages
Might run hotter and will probably be louder...
I just installed my HD 7950. I have idle temps of 31-33C and load temps of 65C. I have a fairly well cooled case.
I guess your temps must be from running multiple monitors. I'm running a single 24 inch display@ 1080p.
The black and Double D are the same cards except the black edition is overclocked. Same cooler though.
Here is a review of the standard double d card:

What's interesting is, they claim this is the coolest card they've...
670 is a great choice, but nothing beats the current 7950 deals for price/performance in the high end segment right now. That XFX 7950 at 1100+ mhz will absolutely destroy a 7970 and all for about 300 USD. It's a steal.
GTX 670 is good and HD 7850 at a lower price range. The 7850 overclocks pretty nicely.
Though IMO at the moment this is unbeatable:

HD 7950 for...
yea, I came here expecting to pay about 300 for a 7870 so I was pretty surprised to find a 7950 in that price range. Can't wait to test out this beast :D when it gets here.
Thanks for the responses everyone. I went with the XFX HD 7950 Double D for 304 after MIR! Outstanding deal. (359.99 - 10% - 20 USD rebate).
Thanks for linking me Kueller.
This is the first time I've ever bought a high end card so I'm very curious to see how hard this thing can blow my HD5770...
I've been having a lot of difficulty with trying to pick a GPU for about 300 USD. I see there are some 7870s for 300 after MIR but I'm just not sure if the 7870 is even worth 50 over the 7850 which seem to overclock well past the stock 7870 performance. The 300 dollar price point seems kind of...
I have been eyeing the HD 6950 for sometime. I found the 2GB version for 210 after rebate. Pretty good but I wonder what HD 7xxx series card 200 dollars can buy. Does anyone know when the upper midrange 7 series cards will be out? Obviously I'm not interested in the 7970 since I can't afford it.
So I've been running a HD 5770 for a while, its done the job decently but struggles in some of the newer games. I recently upgraded my entire system (from a C2D E6400 to a SB I7 2600k). The bottleneck of the system is now obviously my aging HD5770. I'm looking for the very best graphic card I...
