Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
Thanks for confirming how it splits up the PCIe lanes. My next build I'll keep this in mind.
Looks like the least expensive step would be for me to switch to a 16 port x8 HBA instead of using 2 8 port x8 HBA. Stupid how the E5 Xeons have 40 lanes when I don't need that much of a processor...
I have a Supermicro X10SAT motherboard with a E3-1245 v3. I am running 2 PCIe x8 9210-8i SAS controller cards and would like to add a PCIe x8 10Gbe SFP+ Intel card. I've never ran into a PCIe limitation.
E3-1245 v3 says "Max # of PCI Express Lanes is 16"...
So this is where I'm at with this project. I purchased a Supermicro 3U case. Wish I would have got a 4U. Well I guess it has become a 4U case with the power supply sticking out. Waiting on two LSI 9211-8i cards to come from ebay to flash and a fan controller to add more fans.
Due to your recommendations, I got a 3U Supermicro case off ebay. The case is well built and the backplane works well. I'm waiting for my HBA to come in the mail to populate most of the slots. I wish I could figure out why the backplane (SAS-836TQ) runs the fans all at full speed and doesn't run...
Yes correct GB. I thought ZFS uses RAM like a cache so the more RAM the better. I'm sure we've all heard 1:1 HD TB:RAM GB ratio. I know FreeNas suggests nothing less than 8GB now. But I defer to your on the job experience.
I did some research for question 2 and here are my choices based on some recent ebay auctions:
SAS 3200 (LSI 9305-16i) - $400
SAS 3008 (LSI 9300-8i) - $150
SAS 2308 (LSI 9207-8i) - $70
SAS 2008 (LSI 9211-8i) - $60 found 9240 for a little less
1&2 use the newer SFF-8643 forward breakout...
1. As I moved off Windows products a few years ago, I recommend FreeNas.
2. The difficulty with FreeNas is setting it up. The plugins operate in jails which is a good thing but adds levels of difficulty. You have to pass through folders from the jails to the FreeNas base OS to access the content...
I have TS140 E3-1226 16GB ram 5x 4TB drives running FreeNAS for a while. The TS140 has already been moved into an old Antec case that holds 6 drives since the case the TS140 comes with holds only like 2-3 drives.
I want to add another HD array so I need a larger inexpensive case and a HBA since...
