So had I used mdadm do you think it would have just ignored the read errors? or would it have shutdown/alerted me of the problematic hard drive sooner? I guess I don't understand how mdadm would have helped, as the smart data for the harddrive was "passing" the entire time.... [still is lol]

so had I had a true raid card this could have been avoided? or is software raid really the only way... ? [out of warranty by 3 days (headbang) ]
