    You don't need a service remote to access the service menu. You can use the TV's browser, go to a website (not sure if I'm allowed to post here), enter the 0413 code and you'll end up in the service menu. I've done it and it works. Check "method 2" here...

    I think it's normal with age that far vision gets better as near vision gets worse. It's the case for me also. The 42inch isn't far enough to look sharp so I had to get a second prescription of glasses for working on the computer.
