I was thinking of using hdparm to spin down the drives but I will have a look to see if there is power management where if the disks are not accessed for a certain time the server goes into standby and it is woken up again when the hard drives are accessed.

I currently have a Microserver setup with a 250GB system drive and RAIDz with 3 x 1TB.
What I would like to do is spindown the hard disks after a certain time is this possible using the ZFS filesystem?
The hard drives are being detected so I presume the backplane is OK or is this not the case? Is there any other way to check the backplane?
