The repair man came out today, here's a picture I took with the cover off:
The board that is on the right side had places where the soldering had cracked, and the bottom board where the Vertical Sync chip is also has cracked soldering. So he went over all the boards with the different...
That's interesting you say to do the PA241W over the (new) P241W. Others in here said the "P" model is the better choice since it has a regular gamut, where the "PA" has an extended gamut and causes colors to look unnatural. The "P" also has an over-drive you can turn on so that games and movies...
I just tried moving around the wire the vga cable goes into the back of the unit, and it didn't seem to do anything. But I'll make sure to bring that up tomorrow when he's here so he can find any problems with it. If I'm able to get at least another 2-3 years out of this unit, I'll be pleased...
That model seems hard to find, even on-line.
Most are only selling the one that come with the "SV" screen calibration, model P241W-BK-SV, and it's $1000.
I appreciate the offer, and will consider it.
I'm going to try the $75 repair job that I posted above first and see if that fixes it.
The VGA cable on the back of the monitor looks to be non-removable, so can't try another VGA cable.
I contacted NEC and got a # for a local place that does work on their monitors. Guy wants $120-$160 to diagnose the issue, and total cost (diagnose & fix) he estimates at about $300 , depending on parts and labor time.
I then called a guy that had fixed my friend's Panasonic 36" CRT HDTV (one...
I find it interesting that when the vertical on my CRT starts to act up, it's like the image is being pushed down to the very bottom of the screen, and the top 3/4 of the screen is all gray. Using the palm of my hand and banging on the left side of the monitor's cabinet get's the image stable...
Thanks for the additional input. I'm evolved in dozens of hours of work in Word and Web Design weekly, so it's important for text to look sharp. But I also have to deal with a lot of photos for publishing and comparing camera samples, so color is also important, but since my current NEC CRT...
In my living room I have a Panasonic 36HX41 CRT HDTV that's been used for 10 years now. All my friends that have LCD TVs, their image looks like crap next to mine. Only a Plasma TV seems to come close to CRT.
But since it's the CRT monitor that's on it's way out, I need something comparable...
I've been using an NEC FE2111SB CRT monitor for the past six years.
It has a 20" screen (4:3), with a 0.24mm grill pitch, and I run it at 1280x1024 @ 85Hz.
It has a wide range of uses, but mostly with web site editing, Word, image editing, Sony Vegas video editing, and video playback. Not much...
