Ok whats the difference in a controller card and an expander card?
Also the 487738-001 i see....is it a controller or an expander? Seems deliberately confusing in the listing if its one or the other and not both.
Ok so i've looked at the HP Expander owners thread and i'm thinking i will buy one off ebay to go in my WHS 2003 w/PP3 build. It has a Supermicro X8SI6-F board inside.
However when i go to search for the card i see alot of different numbers such as P212, P410, P411, P712....also stuff like...
I think i will go with the Supermicro cage then....still not sure what the physical difference is between the SAS and SATA version. I have very limited knowledge on SAS other than it puts 4 channels into one, or needs breakout cable reverse and forward depending on which way the cabling and...
Thanks for the info, i'm curious do u have a worklog for the setup u used? I'm wondering how you installed the OS drive if i assume u populated all the bays with data drives.... or maybe u didn't.
I'm trying to finish up buying parts for my server and i see there are as few options for the hard drive enclosure.
I found a decent review of 4 different cages(The Icy Dock MB455SFP-B, the Norco SS-500, the SuperMicro CSE-M35T-1 and the iStarUSA BPU-350) here...
Ok so since everyone agrees the motherboard should be changed how about this one:
Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/U - $113.99

How important is L3 cache vs number of cores/threads in an HTPC? I won't be reencoding with it, i do full...
Excellent advice indeed, thanks men!
Well won't be running any VMs but will be seeding torrents and streaming various media files up to full 1080p rips, thru any combination of 3 laptops, 2 Xbox 360s, a PS3 and a PCH C-200. Might get into some PC gaming off the server too if thats fairly easy...
Ok so my closest Micro Center(Brentwood location) is 3 hours away and i want to get a cpu for both a server and htpc build.
For my server i have already decided on the X8SI6-F-O Xeon/LGA 1156 board, and the only 1156 chips i am choosing from at that store are:
Core i3 550 3.2GHz Socket...
I am also curious about doing a Sandy Bridge build, and i am also in the "rather have the power and not need it then not have it and need, camp.." considering how cheap cpus are becoming. I was all set to to go 1156(i5-760) for my file server and 1366(i7-950) for my HTPC both from Microcenter...
I think i am going to go i7-930 after all. I see a Microcenter is 4 hours away is Missouri so i'm gonna either make the drive to pick up a couple at the $199 price point or wait til one pops up on ebay for around $250 total. If i get the i5-760 off the egg at the current $209 with free shipping...
Well i don't mind spending for the best when i buy pc stuff. Since i don't upgrade to often this thing has to be powerful enough to see me thru the next 4 or 5 years.
That being said i will probably make at least one of each flavor then, one 1156 and one 1366. On the 1156 front i like all the...
Ok so let's entertain the thought of going 1156. I was thinking 1366 and i actually have that board picked out on paper, well between the GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5 or RE3. I have no board picked out for 1156 so would love to hear recommendations since they all look close on Newegg. Is there one or...
