    Is the reason you wrote this because the complications that arise, frustration levels, learning curves, cost? Is there one of these that outweighs the others. Aside from backups, at least having a way to absorb a single disk failure is worth the cost and learning of building a RAID...

    Thanks for the reply. After a lot of reading and a few glasses of wine, I think i'm getting close to a decision. First off, my VM's are stored on 2 500GB OCZ SSD's on the ESXI 5.5 server. I think what I may do to avoid another box is use the same server, add a LSI 9211-8i-IT card with RAID...

    Forgot to mention some important items 1) I've got a Gigabit Cisco switch with cables already run to the closet 2) USB 3.0 is likely fine as streaming a movie over gigabit ethernet is fine the the disks will likely be slower than that. 3) Will probably go with 3-4 TB drives up to 10TB total.
