    I'm admittedly less than schooled in recorded programs, so this may or may not be applicable here. If you're converting from .avi, the best prog I've found, and it's EXTREMELY easy to use, is ConvertXToDVD.

    Just because you've never had an issue with your TV does not in any way "prove" that it can't still be an issue. Personally, I've never lost data from an HDD failure, but that doesn't mean I can laugh at someone who uses a redundancy scheme.

    Don't get any kind of cooler, just make sure it's in a well ventilated area. If you're feeling especially paranoid, you could set up a small fan behind it to promote cooling.
