Haswell Xeon ESXi Whitebox + ZFS AiO

Ah, got it, thanks. This project started because my 2 TB NAS is full, so I'm trying to maximize disk space. At the same time, I'm trying to minimize power and physical dimensions (I was originally going for mITX until I realized the limitations). Most of the space in the RAIDZ will be used for...

Haswell Xeon ESXi Whitebox + ZFS AiO

Child of Wonder: The ESXi install and Nexenta/ZFS VM will sit on the Samsung SSD. The Nexenta will have the 4 HDDs and 1 SSD (via VT-d passthru), and I'll pass the ZRAID back to ESX to host my other datastores via NFS. I chose the NAS drives because they would seem a better choice since they...

Haswell Xeon ESXi Whitebox + ZFS AiO

Hey guys, I'm planning on building an all-in-one ESXi+ZFS server for my home lab, and I would like to run the proposed build by everyone here to see if I'm missing anything: CPU: Intel Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O (C222 Chipset) RAM: Kingston 32GB DDR3 ECC...

VMware ESXi + Nexentastor on mITX

I think I'll save myself the hassle and get an IBM ServeRAID m1015. I'll connect that to the PC-Q25B's backplane with reverse breakout cables, and connect the S3700 with forward breakout cable, and pass thru the drives to the Nexenta VM. I'll put ESXi and the Nexenta VM on HDD/SDD connected to...

VMware ESXi + Nexentastor on mITX

So then what are my options? I don't want to dedicate a HDD for just one VM (I only have 6 SATA ports), and I've read that it wouldn't work anyway since it's all or nothing (either you pass thru all HDDs or none, and I want to avoid RDM). The motherboard has one PCIe slot, so I guess I could get...

VMware ESXi + Nexentastor on mITX

Thanks for the reply. I plan to pass the hard drives and SSD to the Nexenta VM and configure the HDDs for raidz2. I want to use the SSD as both an l2arc and ZIL, which is why I thought the higher endurance S3700 made sense. Does that mean I have to put the Nexenta VM on the flash drive?

VMware ESXi + Nexentastor on mITX

I'm planning to build a home server to play around with ESXi and Nexentastor or some other SAN software. I'll also host a few VMs, probably Windows-based (e.g. Exchange). I've done some research and come up with the following parts list: Intel Core i7-3770T Intel S3700 100GB SSD LIAN LI...
