ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

RAID5/6 is designed to be slow ;) We have tons of those in production, on Areca, 3Ware, LSI, Adaptec and ICP controllers....and random IOPs are something to cry for in every setup, regardless of manufacturer, numbers and types of disks. Even in our 8xSSD RAID6 arrays, the random IOPs are lower...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Looks like a compatibility problem... Did you already install the latest firmware on your 1680IX as well as the Intel Expander card? I assume you already tried different SAS ports on the 1680IX. Did you use the correct SAS port on the expander card? depending on model and configuration...

Yes it does, we use 4TB WD RE4 SAS drives with it.

Well, does the event log of the controller show some errors or timeouts for one disk? Cause of semi-working harddisks can screw over complete setups... Dunno how many times we had non booting system or even non POSTing controllers due to one faulty disk. Sometimes it was OK after a...

Well, I suppose that the chance of having the same problems with the expander when using an 1680LP is quite high, as it's the same chipset as your current 1680x. (Intel IOP and dunno what type of "internal" expander") And we all know that Raidcard <-> Expander connections not that seldom suffer...

Could be (to) old Areca driver version installed on your Windows server. Does the ArcHTTP utility work on this computer? Your controller features an out-of-band management port, why not use this one and forget all the hassle with CLI or ArcHTTP utility /service? If two drives failed on one of...

The 1680ix-16 features an internally connected SAS Expander (this second big chip on the card with a cooler on top) and thus an "Enclosure", as the Intel IOP348 ROC only supports 8 native ports.

You may need to wait till recovery anyway, as the Areca does not allow you to make any changes to a Raidset or Volumeset until it is in "normal" state. Though if the Raidset is still OK, the volume will most likely get exported automaticall by the controller, once the rebuild has finished. If...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I had contact with Areca (Kevin W.) in April - the last mail I sent was on the 17th of April. We tested several systems/mainboards, two of them I still remember were: - HP DL360 G5 - SuperMicro X8DTU-6+

Well, there are many storage devices on the VMWare compatibility list that do not work with VAAI either (not only this IBM one). Though normally this ist a known fact and the vendor does mention that you have to disable VAAI in order to prevent data loss with their storage solution. So my...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Uhhh, I fought this very same problem earlier this year. After upgrading several ESXi hosts from 4.1 to 5.1 we encountered data corruption on many VMs. (whenever we executed a migration from one datastore to the other) We did tests with three different types of areca controllers (1680, 1880...
