Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
16K stripe size would be quite inefficient with the latest hardware IMO. I agree with you, and I guess if we want something to not fall into others' hands, the best option is to have a small encrypted volume for those things.
That would be a big liability issue for that company! All replacement drives I received in the past were zeroed, but I didn't really inspect their full contents. :(
Thanks for the good explanation! Going with 1-2 zero/random passes makes sense now! I'm not too worried about the three-letter acronym people - if they really wanted to read my data, I'm sure they'd find a way. :)
And no 35 passes for me. :)
Nevermind, then. I meant this one:

Atlanta has been on the list for a while now, but they're progressing so slowly! They go apartment-by-apartment and even then it takes forever to cover neighborhoods. :(
I wonder how many times do you have to repeat dd to make sure the data is completely gone? I heard they can recover even erased data through the drive's internal self correction and redundancy mechanisms.
Off topic: are you the Zarathustra who maintained the NWN POTM servers? If so, it's a...
This is one of those crappy HP laptops whose mobo/CPU fail after a few years of use. This listing is for the case that includes the screen, keyboard, etc. It's from my GF, so everything is in great condition, no scratches, etc. No HDD or RAM included: ebay listing
This HTPC case looks great and it's in good condition:

Even though the interior is a bit small, it's very easily customizable. I was able to fit a lot in there!
I still have the mobo and other stuff that came out from inside if you're interested.
Tell me more! I previously installed a 1066 MHz FSB Q6700 to my Dell 745, but now there is another machine that needs an upgrade.
I think it would be too lame to go for the Q6700. I could go for the top-of-the-line 1333MHz FSB Core 2 Quad, which is Q9650...
You could always go the dual-boot route? At least to try to get it to work. I run my XBMC on a Linux laptop, but I know what you're saying. I do have a Windows box to play games, etc. Although now that there's a Steam client for Linux..
I cut out big holes in the back of my tv stand, and it improved the air circulation a lot. I had these thin wooden sheets and I cut generous-size holes from side to side at the top and at the bottom. So hot ait escapes from the top and fresh air enters from the bottom.
