People seem to like the IBM M1015 card, but i still have not found out if it can work as an HBA card without RAID-0 for each disk and support smart (That is with linux and a stock kernel)
Unfortunately I have not solved this problem. If I disconnect every single drive from the expander the card boots ok, and then i reconnect them one by one so that the OS sees them.
@golemcito
with new kernels (2.6.38) everything works fine for me. If you have already bought this card then...
First you subscribe to the mailing list
http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#linux-scsi
Then you send an email to that list, describing your problem and attaching the relevant dmesg output.
But first upgrade your kernel, chances are that it will solve your problem
No get the ECC RAM because FlexRaid will process huge amounts of data and you dont want corrupted parity data when you need to restore a failed drive. Not to mention the fact that with ECC ram your system will have much better uptime and fewer crashes.
There are some patches that seem to be relevant,
Jiri Slaby at 22/6, James Bottomley at 27/7, one from David Milburn at 6/8 and two from Dan Carpenter at 11/8
After 5 days of testing, I can attest that mvsas with 2.6.35 works fine, with no errors, freezes or anything like that. I have an HP SAS Expander + 13x1.5TB single drives with JFS and no RAID and my OS is Arch Linux
@Woutern83:
I don't use RAID, so I cant offer anything on that front, but I...
An HP SAS Expander + a cheap compatible SAS controller is probably the best for your needs. See the first post of the HP SAS Expander thread for more detail
Hello, do any of you guys get the Port 3 error? My SASLP-MV8 does not see any drives, takes ages to boot, and prints many port 3 errors. If I press any key, boot continues and i see all my drives under linux and everything works ok(It is just a PITA for a headless server). Disks are connected to...
That's good news. I just installed 2.6.35 on my system, seems that the mv_abort_task errors and subsequent controller freezes that i got when i was copying files with thunar have disappeared. Now I am trying all the other things that froze the controller, and will report back.
PS. When i am...
That is very good news indeed. With 2.6.34 I can only use jfs, as btrfs and xfs result in the card locking the system(I don't use RAID). Furthermore, when using jfs, if I try to copy files via thunar (a graphical file manager), the card locks up, but when I use cp on bash there is no problem.
Yes they can be writable, and it works quite intelligently. For instance, if I have a movie in disk 3, and i go to its "union" folder and copy a subtitle to it, the file gets written on the same disk as the movie. I generally avoid copying big files to the union folder and prefer to write to the...
You can also use linux with aufs2, in order to merge the contents of your drives into one virtual drive. In fact, I have been using it for a long time and it works just fine. There probably is something like that for windows too, or maybe you can use libraries
