    If I were you, I'd wait a week or two for the non reference r9 290s to be filtered out. But since you want to buy one ASAP, I'd try and find a GTX 780. Even a second hand 780. The r9 290 and 780 have pretty comparable performance, but the amd runs really hot. Have a look at a few benchmarks...
