Question - FreeNas build on the cheap

Nice. How much RAM do you use in your box? I read they highly advise against going below 8GB. I have 4GB in mine on FreeNas9.3 and stressed the read/write pretty heavily last night (for my use anyway). The system consistently used almost all of the memory, but performance was still good. Do you...

Question - FreeNas build on the cheap

Just finished the setup. Running the 5x2TB drives in a RAID-Z2. Performance is much better than I anticipated it would be. I am getting right around 115MB/sec writes and 85MB/sec reads. More than enough for what I need. Thanks for reply earlier!

Question - FreeNas build on the cheap

Thanks. I am going to give it a go later today. I will post results in case any one else is interested. And yes I will do the RAID-Z2 rather than traditional "raid6". I still am not familiar with the ZFS terminology for their equivalent to the common RAID#'s.

Question - FreeNas build on the cheap

OK so I am in the process of getting a better solution for my data storage. Currently it just all sits on a couple of 1.5 TB drives in my desktop and backs up to a USB drive. I have acquired components over the years, and I just recently purchased (for next to nothing) 5 2TB sata drives from...

I wish I could just open the new plan on Tmo, her mom is on her plan with Verizon and does not want to switch (she just uses a flip phone) so its complicated. I'm trying to stay with Android if I can. She has an ipad mini and hates it since the new iOS update... Apparently pinterest crashes...

Phones that support Verizon and T-Mobile?

Hi All, I am looking to purchase my fiance a new phone for Christmas. Currently, she is on Verizon and has an old GS3 that has a finicky USB connection, and does not hold a charge for more than a few hours. She hates Verizon, and we will be adding her to my T-Mobile plan when her contract...

    VOIP over VPN question

The cisco firewalls have qos so it should be fine for that. I just wonder how the phones at the remote site will be routed back to the VOIP system correctly if they are on another subnet. The tagged traffic would get stripped once it leaves the router, right? So perhaps rules would have to be...

    VOIP over VPN question

Hello, I have a question on extending a VOIP system over a VPN to remote sites. At the moment we have a main office where the phone system resides and is set up. The future plan is to tie our 4 remote offices back to the main office with site to site VPN. Can the voip system be extended to...

    USB Portable Charger Problem

Hi Everyone, I am guessing this is where I would post this, but if I am on the wrong forum, I apologize. I am in the process of making a portable raspberry pi emulator station within a small 10x7 inch case. I did some research, and ended up purchasing the following for the screen, battery...

    PS3 Laptop Mod

Hi, Wondering if anyone knows of a site that has a guide for a PS3 laptop mod or detailed parts dissection of a PS3. I have found numerous articles on the xbox 360 laptop mod, but can't find anything on the PS3. I know this has been done, just really no documentation on it. I would rather...

    Entry Level Server

Hello, I am looking to buy/build an entry level lab server mainly for testing out leaning virtualization. Plan on mainly using hyper-v but would like to test others as well. I am looking to spend no more then $650 if possible, but would like to incorporate usb/pci pass through, and I not not...
