    Thanks for pointing that out. Tested the 4 Hdds that I had originally in the case when the other 4 caught fire and lo and behold all four of these are dead now too. They spin up, but apparently nothing else. Swapped in the 4 replacements that WD sent me and they show up without a problem...

    I had just the forward cable attached.....later tried just the reverse out of desperation. I connected the first 2 connectors from the forward cable to the drives and the forward cable directly into the raid controller. It didn't see the drives at all, even when telling it to rescan. Edit...

    I'm confused..... I removed 2 disks from the backplane, added power and connected the forward breakout cable from the hdds directly to the raid controller. It didn't see them with either the forward or the reverse breakout cables. Added the expander back into the mix and it didn't change...
