I suppose I needed to be more specific to say, I'm concerned that M$ hasn't updated WMC. I understand the business aspect and the usage appears to be lackluster, but with the emergence of smart appliance I would bet the usage would increase unless M$ plans to replace WMC with something entirely...
Since I use Xbox 360 as an extender I'm not seeing a need to upgrade. I typically am an early adopter, but I'm truly concerned M$'s position on WMC in Win 8.
Find a nice tube amp off ebay and display it on your desk. Looks cool and sounds great. I have a Creek OBH-11 at work and still considering replacing it with a DIY tube amp.
I vote the 360s as it would serve a 2nd purpose not talked about: read-to-go network gaming. You could save some pennies and go used or arcade versions of the 360 then build yourself a decent box with InfiniTV tuners and some fancy raid setup or SSDs for enough io to support the various...
You were doing what I'm basically doing now. Running WMC with My Movies (I have the points for transcoding enabled, easiest working solution!) and using an Xbox as an extender (along with a couple WD TV Lives). Seems dated, but it works and so far nothing has really done well to compete with...
I have a first gen Chumby. It's a flash appliance which does a little more than show pictures. Mine shows Chuck Norris facts which obviously more important than personal family photos. :D
For just a few bones more, you can get a cheap android tablet of the same size or better that can offer...
I have (2) WDTV Live and they are inexpensive media players, but I didn't have much luck with full DVD rips/mkv over wireless (Buffalo WLI-IC-GN, the little guy); I had to go wired. I would still recommend them. With the non-plus box I have I used WDLXTV firmware. An alternative to wireless is...
Really  was that necessary?! Here's my subjective response to your subjective comment of the thread owner's subjective title, it's subjective to declare his HTPC not "ultimate" because it's missing ECC. Flag on the field, in my subjective opinion.
I would have to disagree if you read the part of my post:
I'm only run a single drive.. the only set that is running mirrored is the one I have yet to fill.
Just thought of another benefit if you set it up right (which I haven't, so take this as a theory) you could have the drives turn off...
I stopped using RAID 5 as you read about them you don't have 100% redundancy and there's a percentage change the raid won't rebuild. (I found out the hard way) I have multiple TB drives and I opted to go mirrored sets. Once the set is full, I pull a drive out for a backup and break the mirror...
I've been using a Logitech Edge for a couple years now and am pleased. Recently, however, I've been using MobileMouse on my iPad and Touch which is the handiest app for controlling my HTPC. No noticeable latency! Besides, you are pry carrying your phone right now, and if it's a smart phone...
