    I don't know where to look to see if it's detected in the BIOS. My BIOS doesn't support booting from eSata devices. I am dual-booting with Ubuntu and it works straight away. I'm pretty sure this rules out the cable, but I'll see if I can borrow one to totally eliminate this.

    Yes I have the most up-to-date chipset driver provided by my motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte) which I believe is actually identical to the upstream nVidia one. I also have the latest BIOS.
