newegg's oem harddrive packaging is notoriously bad. They often just place drives in bubble wrap alone in cardboard boxes.
It's kind of funny because I looked into replacing a hitachi hard drive through manufacturer warranty, and they require that you ship it in its own special foam packaging...

nvm it's 1.47 firmware, just for some reason it says v1.0 in the web interface overview.
and yes, my point was that you apparently need ses2 disabled for the 1680 series and it would helpful to have that info in the first post.

Don't know if you answered this already, but have you tried daisy chaining the sas expanders? IMO you're not done until you have the full 128drives that the areca supports.
