no luck with 'byteback' it couldnt find the MBR, and upon further testing it gave a 'could not read disk' error. looks like a logic board swap is in order. anywhere besides ebay to find a drive/board for cheap?

no dice, spinrite didnt recognize it, and PCLinuxOS recognized the harddrive in the hardware config but didnt see any partition or drive letter. hmm

ok heres the deal, a couple weeks ago my motherboard died (an asus k8n). i believe the memory controller was at fault, but the ide controller might've gone down with it. (memtest found tons of errors on every compatible stick of ram i found in the house.. i dont think so.) since then i tried...

hm, the cpu fan is staying on now, but it still wont boot properly. should i run memtest with the ati card or a different one that i have that i know works?

i just tried to turn of qfan, but by the time i got into the bios the fan was already stopped (scaring the crap out of me, because its not automatically restarting to turn the fan back on) and within a few seconds it froze.
