    OK since you're all dying to know the answer, here is an update / partial fix (not an explanation). Bought a new Silicon Image based sata card, also failed with aforementioned graphics cards but worked with the Matrox. (Note an ancient Adaptec SCSI card worked will all gfx cards no problem)...
