What connection were you using on the original monitors? What are you using now? If there is a difference, the answer may lie in there.
I am only speculating. Usually the video card is "told" that the monitor is not on (or not there) and stops sending it a signal. Somehow that messages isn't...
I have two U2711's, which are 16:9. This is the first time I've had a 16:9 screen (apart from my TV). I must say that I would prefer it to be 16:10, but it is not a deal breaker.
I will try hooking mine up with DVI this evening. I have only connected with the supplied displayport cable. It does seem odd that displayport vs DVI would make a difference. But the quality of the cable, as you suggest, may be the issue.
Screenshot or link to such text on the internet is what I want so I can test this out on MY u2711 to see if it is present or noticeable to me. I've only had mine a few days. So far I have not encountered anything unpleasant, though I do notice the AG somewhat.
I've only had mine for a few days. So far only powered up one of my two. I'm doing some experimenting. So far the Adobe RGB seems the best out of the box to my untrained eye. I've downloaded a few icc profiles from the web as well.
