    Microsoft to buy Activision Blizzard

Not all that shocking, if I'm honest. Microsoft can commit to cross-platform Call of Duty support as much as it likes, but that's not going to alleviate worries that it will purposefully worsen the experience for non-Microsoft platforms and withhold other major franchises. Also, what is it with...

What laptop should I get my wife from best buy under $500?

Can't complain for that price, even without the gift card. You're right that a basic laptop will do the trick here — the only way you could do better is to buy an open box or refurb, and not everyone is comfortable with that.

    Pixel 7 / Pixel 7 Pro / Pixel 7a

Still early days, but not seeing a huge improvement on the Pixel 6 just yet. Going to give it a day or two to see if there's a practical difference.

    Pixel 7 / Pixel 7 Pro / Pixel 7a

Installed it last night, but haven't had a chance to test it. One of the definite perks of Pixel ownership is iPhone-like speedy access to new updates — obviously other brands won't get Pixel drops, but it would be nice if more brands committed to fast OS and feature updates.

Best or some of the best Android smartphone ?

I'd have to disagree to some extent. As I understand it, the Alcatel/TCL OS version update policy tops out at three years for "Pro" phones, and just one for everything else. I know software upgrades aren't everything, but I don't think we should accept phones whose OS is set in stone long before...

    Samsung Z Fold 4

The Z Fold 3 apparently held up well so long as you took reasonably good care of it, and I'd expect the 4 to be a bit better. With that said, this is still young technology that's more fragile than conventional phones. If you have to ask, you're probably better off getting an S22 Ultra (or...

GTX 1060 finally dethroned as top GPU on steam!!! By the 1650...

This is partly why I have to giggle a bit when some folks claim the latest consoles are doomed because a good gaming PC can technically outperform them. That's true, but the gaming PC market isn't dominated by enthusiasts who drop a small fortune on their GPU; it's led by everyday people with...

Steam On Linux Usage Climbs Higher Thanks To The Steam Deck

The issue, I'd say, is that the most successful Linux consumer experiences are the ones that are as least stereotypically Linux as you can get. The Steam Deck is mostly doing well because it's a tightly integrated, easy to use platform that strips out most of Linux's customizability and...

Voice Assistants Dying, Alexa $10 Billion Loss Expected in 2022

That may be a fairer way of putting it. Personally, I'm willing to accept the risks of using Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri, and there's no evidence they're recording 24/7 or otherwise doing dramatically more than their creators claim. There are also logical reasons why they're unlikely to go...

Voice Assistants Dying, Alexa $10 Billion Loss Expected in 2022

I won't rehash UnknownSouljer's position beyond pointing out that you just amplified the reductio ad absurdum to an even greater degree between this and the "if they didn't have the data they couldn't lose it" statement. You need a baseline level of trust in data handling to function in the...

Voice Assistants Dying, Alexa $10 Billion Loss Expected in 2022

Eh, assuming extreme abuse is not rational and fosters unhealthy levels of paranoia. I don't doubt that these companies are pushing harder than we'd like, and occasionally what they say they're doing. But there's still a distinction between that and believing that the Echo in your bedroom will...

One Weird Trick Relaunching RTX 4080 12GB as 4070 Ti

I suspect there will be a lower price, design tweaks or both. If it was just a name change, it wouldn't take much more to relaunch the GPU than reprinting boxes and changing device IDs.

One Weird Trick Relaunching RTX 4080 12GB as 4070 Ti

Good grief, folks... NVIDIA messed up, but it's not some unforgivable crime. If the RTX 4070 Ti is basically a 4080 12GB at a lower price, the company will have learned its lesson.

iPad Pro 2022 with M2 chip

Sounds about right. Like Apple's "Pro" Macs, if you can actually benefit from the added performance... you'll already know. I'd say the iPad Air M1 is plenty for everyday users who are serious about the iPad, and you only really need the iPad Pro if you're either a serious creative or just can't...

Voice Assistants Dying, Alexa $10 Billion Loss Expected in 2022

That's one of the things that amuses me about the "smart speakers are spying devices" crew. The AI can't even recognize some of our commands when we explicitly state them, but somehow it's supposed to be good enough that Amazon or Google can pluck shopping recommendations out of half-heard...
