    I have a 11x2tb mdadm raid 6 and it runs great very fast and stable, if the os dies then i reinstall linux and am good to go again. I would recommend it over hardware raid any day.

    Just use XBMCbuntu on the media pc and create a mdadm array on the ubuntu box and your done. Simple and super effective, if you like more of a GUI you can install webmin to manage everything.
