I'm in the same boat. I have two 20WMGX2s. So far I've only tried one bigger screen, the Dell U2415. It's matte, though, which I found out I'm not a big fan of. And it's only a 60hz model.
Compared to the NEC, it's full of compromise. Not surprising its price point I guess.
With the 6-bit...
NEC 20WMGX2 (new) - No
NEC 20WMGX2 (refurb, returned) - Yes (hum), when in standby
NEC 20WMGX2 (replacement) - No
Almost all my PC CRTs buzzed (although quietly).
This++. When I got my first LCD (besides laptops), the 2000FP, I was shocked at how bright it was with a black screen.
Even plasmas (except [maybe] the soon-to-be-defunct Kuro line), can't get that dark (not like CRTs).
IIRC, at 75hz, LCDs drop every 5th frame since they really only show 60hz anyway. The only reason you'd want to run 75hz is if you use vsync and your system can't push 60fps, but can push 37.5fps. Otherwise, it will drop down to 30fps instead (because it will refresh every other frame since it...
If you crank up the brightness really high and look at very dark pictures/patterns, do you see dithering? Sounds like I'll be hanging onto my 20wmgx2's for now. I wonder if LG's e-IPS model will be any better. Still, the 2209wa is what I'd get if I was buying new right now.
If you're still good with the size/resolution/glossy finish, then hang onto it. All the current monitors have trade-offs (e.g., go up in size/resolution, but lose to increased lag, wide gamut [a con, unless you're color managed for it], or viewing angles [*VA/TN panels]).
Unless a miracle...
++ This is what makes TN fail horribly for anything remotely requiring correct color.
Trying to show someone else what's on your screen sucks, too (e.g., shopping online with my S.O. on our laptop). Working underneath a desk and looking up at a TN panel isn't much fun either. :P
I got my replacement unit back from NEC yesterday. It appears to be a completely different unit (different s/n, no scratch, no high pitch sound in standby either :D). I only had a few minutes to test it, so no thorough check for dead pixels, yet. :p
Still no remote, connection panel cover, or...
