Perhaps it depends on the modem itself, but when I was in college the cable guy gave me a generic two-way splitter when I got service and I never had any issues with either the internet or television. I know for a fact that my place now has a three-way splitter in the wall that splits the line...
Prime95 is Windows based. It'll tell you on screen if there's a problem, too, it wont just seize up or go BSOD on you... so you should be able to differentiate between the random crashing you're having and Prime95 finding an issue.

This sounds like an awful piss-off, man.
It could be the PS or RAM as others have suggested. For the ram I'd suggest you use Prime95 to fully test the ram. I wont put any new machine into service at the office until it'll run a Prime95 Torture Test (Blend method) for 24 hours. If it is...
One of my first 9-5 jobs was building a new staff network for a small town library. I named the 5 workstations Frank, Dean, Sammy, Joey & Peter after the Rat Pack entertainers from the 50s. The Dean Martin workstation later lost a fan one weekend and burnt up. Go figure.

May I suggest, ray4389, that you bookmark the official Stanford F@H webpage on the computer and then ask him to check it out for himself. This seems like one of those situations where a person (your dad) would be able to convince himself of the truth of the matter by exploring it at his own...
I think it's a damned good idea. Especially with so many 192 mb folding boxen joining the effort soon. ;) I know I'd be interested.
I dont have the chops with the penguin to hack it together, though. I'd be happy to host the distro on my http server, though. At least as long as it's not...
