Sorry, I'm knd of a newbie. How do I check if the drivers are current? And how do I update them?

Whenever I try to plug any USB device (flash drive, mp3 player, etc) into my computer, something really weird happens. It makes that little noise acknowledging it's detection. But then, after a second or two, it makes the noise that means it was unplugged. It does this many many times then...
