Battletech Kickstarter News.

An Unseen? Are they licensing that or is a Harmony Gold rage-suit coming?
It's complicated, it involves more than harmony gold, plus the reseens and resculpts.

Remember, they are using the same models as Mechwarrior Online. So, the Marauder no longer looks like a Macross pod, the Battlemaster/Thunderbolt etc no longer look like Dugrams, etc.

Bottom line is that the legalities are pretty much sorted at this point.

That's good, looking forward to a Rifleman.

Yea, I don' tlike all the MWO models, but they did a great job on the reseen/resculpt Rifleman.

They are using the MWO models as a base but I believe they are tweaking things as needed so we might be pleasantly surprised.

It's looking good. Particularly for a Unity game. Still curious about what video settings will be available, though.

Also, part two of the Stackpole novella was released. Part one was pretty great, so I'm looking forward to that as well.

Happy about the beta being soon but I'm more happy with Paradox being on board. The seem to be one of the publishers who are not total assholes.
It also appears that the agreement between Paradox and HBS is pretty Limited. That's always a good thing. It's nice to have someone to help you ship a game without having their fingers in it mucking it up.

well,

as much as I love the BT lore and universe...

personally, I am never having anything to do with PGI ever again, if that means another 10 or 20 years before I can play a battletech/mechwarrior branded game so be it

those bridges been burnt long since

Well, since all this means is that PGI is allowing Hairbrained Schemes to use the 3d models and such, I don't think you have to worry too much about getting any PGI "stink" on you if you play this new game.

Are you aware that PGI was finally able to release many of the mechs designs that they were legally prevented from using by FASA?

In MWO there are now Marauders and Warhammers, Rifleman and Archers, and even PhoenixHawks. They are not exact duplicates but they are not too bad at all.

I like that they are not adding on extra stretch goals after hitting the 2.5mil. All additional funds will go into extra polish and post release ongoing development. Post release also may include co-op multiplayer against AI.

Actually I could really dig me and two friends controlling a lance each against an AI if the AI is decent.

Does FASA even exist anymore? I think they were absorbed by Microsoft
Regardless it was Harmony Gold that was the stickler. I think the PGI designs are based on the Project Phoenix redesigns but perhaps tweaked to be a little closer to the originals.

The multiplayer video was awesome. I wonder what happened during the cut segment - they had just started trash talking... :troll:

I'll stand corrected no problem, I just knew it was some Japanese outfit that was in the way.

The licensing and ownership of IP from FASA is always an interesting web. Currently one of the original creators of FASA, Jordan Weisman, owns the IP and licensing of much of their material. You can read more about the path the IP has taken at his Wikipedia page. He created Harebrained Schemes and did kickstarters for the Shadowrun games and is now producing the BattleTech game with Paradox Interactive, which makes some pretty incredible games.

I'm really hoping they do the progression system of the mercenary campaign well. For example, starting off with a crappy lance of Locusts and building up to a mega lance of Battlemaster and Atlas assault mechs that just steamrolls everything in their path.

Today is Beta release day!!!
Will post pictures and impressions when I can, but some leaked videos look fantastic.

Long story short:
Topps owns all pencil and paper game rights.
Microsoft owns all electronic game rights AND any related physical merchandise rights. They are licensing to PGI and Harebrained Schemes.

Finished my first match. Very pleased. One of my urban mechs got his AC taken out quickly so he spent the rest of the game head butting the mechs in their stomachs.
AI seems pretty good from my one match and what I've watched onine. Took down 2 of my mechs and damaged the other two before I took them out.

My only compliant so fat is the floating text over the mechs is there all the time. Kind of blocks things.

I'm going to waste lots of time with this game. Might even draw me back into multiplayer which I haven't been into for years.

Got absolutely stomped my first match (I'm blaming the instructions not loading :ninja:)

I won the two matches after that but still took a beating. Not too bad so far.

Considering how solid the skirmishes are and how bug free the engine feel I have high hopes for the campaign. They certainly know how to write a good story and keep you pumped if the Shadowrun games are anything to go by.

Yeah my second match with an assault lance on a desert map was painful. I'm not mixing things up too much, both sides are the same pilots and mechs. Only managed to take down one and strip the armor from two more. The Awesome unscratched came up and stomp on my last mechs center torso....was pretty good way to die!

Long range poking early on seems like a good place to start. Mechs with holes in them are dead meat when they get closer.

Looks pretty good. They just need to release a good Battletech/MechWarrior sim, that is not a online only FPS game.

I got a couple rounds in last night- it looks good, was fun, and worked well. It has a very MechCommander kind of feel to it, which is great. I cheat- er, stacked the odds in my favor though and ran my lances about 10M to 15M heavier than the AI's since I was just jumping in and didn't bother to read the provided manual. Even still the AI held up pretty well. The maps do seem a little small though, as it felt like it was only a turn or 2 until contact and everything turned into a slugfest. That, or I'm just crap at strategy (probably this). Looking forward to more time with the beta this weekend.

Stand off engagement seems to be pretty valuable compared to brawling at the beginning, then focus firing on whoever the AI sticks too far out front.

Fielded one each of the two Awesome models, a panther and a centurion. Tough combo with all the long range weapons.
And the awesome's huge amount of amor really shows.

Too bad it seems like they are using PGI's hit boxes as well as the models cause the Awesome CT seems like a real damage magnet ;)
Lol.
For me it was the RA. Which is always home to some weapon, of course. Seems to be made of paper mache.

Played about a dozen matches and never had an issue with one location being hit more. Then right after I saw this post I played and had three of my CTs blown out. They were not perfect cores but I'd say a good 90% of the damage landed there.

Joking aside I think they still have a lot of tuning and bug fixing to do on their hit modeling

For instance I've seen a lot misses animated as hits (single weapon shots so i know I didn't see things wrong)

I had a match last night where I had two Griffins performing alpha strikes into the back of a Kintaro. Took 3-4 round before the stupid thing finally went down o_O

I had something similar happen. I had an Awesome bury three PPC shots into a Kintaro, which was missing an arm, leg and most of a torso on the side it was struck from, with 100% hit chances.
And nothing happened.

But it is a beta, and from HBS it's a REAL beta, not a demo, or preview. But based on what I'm seeing, I like where this is going.

Here's some first look footage at the dropship (base of operations), open-ended single-player mercenary campaign and some new gameplay footage.

Looks great so far!
