Studios Flirt with Offering Movies Early in Home for $30

WTF? it costs 15 at a matinee just to see a movie in the theater. Its like 20 for a normal movie and nearly 30 for an IMAX 3D movie. I'll gladly pay 30 to stream it at home...you know why?

No annoying people (celll phones, talking, chewing, moving around, itching etc, you name it Ive seen it).
No annoying parking/traffic issues
I sit where I want in very comfortable seats
No bullshit about I cant bring food or drink in
No bullshit about not being able to protect myself

Most movies aren't worth the hassle of dealing with the above. VERY select few are just to get the huge screen (and Im talking like 2-3 /yr at best on a good year). Admittedly some theaters are allowing food and drink or have a reserved seating option with reclining seats...but those tickets are, yep you guessed it about 30 bucks.

TBH i don't watch movies in theaters so 15 was a guess at best.

but fuck me sideways i was close.

So let's see..

$12 for a ticket where I live. I get to watch on a huge screen with decent sound (albeit too loud) and if anything goes wrong with the showing I'll get a refund. I can buy snacks or bring them. I'm trying to say I get some sort of service for those $12. Times two that's $24.

Now they want to take $30 from me without rendering ANY service (save for streaming, cheap as dirt) or providing facilities. And, if something goes wrong with the download/stream, I'll be out the money.

Perhaps if you have a large party of viewers it makes a lot of sense if your home theater is really good. Mine's not, it's just about average.
Here's what I want: $15 for a one-time stream at 1080p for a brand-new release. Perhaps add a few bucks for 4K glory. Anything else is ridiculous to me and I won't do it.

Step One: Get a Front Projector for cheap. Step Two: Never go to the movie theater again. I'd gladly pay $30 for a NEW RELEASE (not 3 months later....it would have to be at release time or within a month, no longer)....otherwise I wait the 3-5 months for the disc/streaming option.

Best thing movie theaters can do to get me back into it is the following:

1) Serve Alcohol
2) Do not allow anyone in that is not 21+. Admittedly, this may not be enough, but it will get rid of the majority of stupid cell-phone wielding annoying children.

Until then, I likely won't visit a theater. Also, if a movie has been out for a couple weeks I'm not paying $30 to have the luxury of watching it at home. At that point I can wait a couple more weeks and buy it for $20 or rent it for $1 at Red Box.

We got one like that here. Big leather recliners, almost a foot of space between each one, they take your order before the movie starts and bring it to you when it's ready, if you want another beer or something, all you have to do is write it onto a notecard, push the call button next to your seat and pass it to the attendant. And they're hella good at staying out of everyone's vision.

If release day...easily...done. we have a HT in our house with a 110" screen. Bring a couple of friends over (they bring snacks) and the price is worth it.

Didn't AMC get sold to china? So paying to watch a propaganda show in a theater owned by China.

They should have to pay me $30 for every god forsaken remake/reboot and sequel they spew out. The studios buy up scripts for original movies then just sit on them while they put out the laziest movies possible.

I mean FFS, I haven't even felt compelled to download anything released in about the past 5 years due to there being nothing innovative or spectacular to watch being released.

Same here except it is one screen per theater and like ~6 theaters do this, and only like $15-20 per ticket. I tried it once and it is a great experience. Normally I just get the $5 showings and don't buy anything there other than the ticket. For $30, it better be high quality 4K on release day or it won't work at all.

The theaters around here have been renovating their facilities after wondering if maybe people didn't want to pay lots of money to watch a movie in a nasty environment. We've also got one of the dinner and a movie theaters that is 21+ only so no kids.

Well, we would start getting pirated copies with perfect audio instantly now, instead of having to sort through cams, hope for a screener, or some lucky asian hd copy that slips through.

Condition:

Actual (as in, not scaled) 4k with HDR, WITHOUT requiring HDCP 2.2

You'd be surprised at just how big of a customer base they'd get if they removed HDCP 2.2 requirement.

Lollerwaffle: what theaters let you bring in outside food?

I might be willing to do this for a few movies - but not 30-45 days later. If it is in the cinema and I can pay $30, yes. Hell, I have a family of four. If we all go see a movie - I'm spending $100 on the whole experience (drinks, popcorn, dinner/lunch, etc).

Your situation is about the only one for whom a CONCURRENT release for home viewing at a ~$30 price point is feasible. For me, the entire point of going to the movies is the spectacle of the big screen and encompassing sound so I rarely go for anything other than a big budget action movie. Watching at home would mean missing out on that crucial part of the experience (and a nice artificial "cherry" flavored slurpee) as well as paying more than for one or two tickets.

The amount of mandatory ads in the beginning would be unbearable.

I would also not be surprised if streaming reintroduced the intermission, for yet more ads or even a digital survey.

Naw I really enjoy going to the "Alamo Draft House" in Denver they have a full bar with local beers and you can order food and drinks during the movie. They have a strict one warning for disruption then they kick you out.

They even got samuel l Jackson to warn you now

IF I pay 30 dollars to watch it at home whos gonna make me a bourbon milkshake when I get thirsty halfway through the movie?

It makes sense if you have home theater room with 7.1 or better audio and at least 10 grand in Audio equipment (plus a good screen), but otherwise, I'd rather pay to see the movie in a theater. I know most of you live in the ghetto and have nothing but awful theaters with sticky floors and noisy kids, but I've gone to multiple places in Dallas and that's rarely the case and a 60 to 75' screen is better than a 100" screen and most home theaters can't touch the sound of a decent theater.

But I can see how 30 bucks works if you've got kids. Personally I have no problem going to a movie and not getting a coke and popcorn (though occasionally I do get them)....and if I do that it's 8-10 bucks, cuz I do matinees, when the prices are lower and the crowds are sparse (better to get that perfect seat in the middle)

I would so do this, esp if you could pre-download it like games, so you wouldn't have streaming losses. I would gladly pre-download 50+ gig 4K movies for 30 bucks. As long as they came out less than 3 weeks after opening night and I can pause it for bathroom breaks lol.

I just went and saw Beauty and the Beast with the family this week. Even with seeing it at a Matinee time and with the "popcorn Bucket" we still spent 110 bucks for the four of us. I spent 200.00 dollars for the Star-wars release, 3d, plus concessions on opening day shit adds up fast, for a family of four.

30 bucks 45 days after release FO. My internet sucks and unless I can download it in an excellent quality for local playback with high def audio get bent.

$30 lol. FU studies. Maybe we don't go b/c you keep raising prices and I cannot afford or wish to spend that much to take my wife, kids, etc... Plus the $10 pop or $15 popcorn that is free refills, oh but wait only on the giant $25 bucket, but we forgot to tell u that up front. Or maybe it's the dipshit actors spouting off about how we all need to bow down and embrace their politics and virtue signaling.

Some of you act like you need to buy popcorn and crap. At home when I watch a movie I don't load up on snacks, you can do the same at a theater. My local one is $5 one evening of the week, otherwise it is $10.50. Refillable popcorn is $6, soda $5 or so. Seating can be reserved online or at the theater when you buy the tickets. I tend to buy nothing but a ticket when I go.

Though the recliner, special seating crap is becoming common and those cost extra, so if I go again I will try to arrange seating earlier to get a good cheap seat.

Almost all the theaters in my area server alcohol and food in the theater , with reclining assigned seating now. All the AMCs adapted within the last year and we have others like IPIC and Roadhouse Cinema. The only gross old school theaters are Harkins and the annoying crowd seems to stick to Harkins. I really can't complain about theaters anymore like I used to. I would much rather go to the theater for 30 bucks and get the nice big screen. I've enjoyed seeing all the movie theater competition improve things in area so quickly and drastically.

Heh, $30. Reminds me of Comcast pay per view. $4.99 for SD movie and $5.99 for HD. For less than $30 you can buy the blu-ray 4-6 months after the movie is released these days.

30 bucks?? get fucked.

price of a ticket so 15 or so and maybe.

remember piracy is free. so people paying anything is better than nothing.

Sure. But $30 and invite a bunch of friends over. They bring the beer and grub, you bring the movie.

With the right home theater setup, it could be pretty economical.

Lol @ 30-45 days. I would happily pay 30 bucks for a simultaneous theater release, but not a month and a half after. That's ridiculous.

It's already too expensive to go to the theaters & now they want to just overcharge people right in their homes? I don't fucking think so.

30$ Then just imagine all the hoops you will probably have to jump through and all the unskippables.

BUT. People at the movies are so disrespectful and can often ruin the experience.
On the other side, theater sound is far too loud. (And often mixed for that same loudness level, which doesn't always translate so well to lower volumes)

My gripe with movies isn't so much the price... it's established and expected you are going to get wallet fucked if you go to the movies. My problem is after I fork over that much money, without fail some dumb fuck family sits in front or behind me, talks, cries, fucks around during the movie and ruins in for all the people around them.

Their inability to use a condom all those years ago is now the reason I missed the good part in the movie. I'd be more willing to go to the theater if I knew they were going to be removed once they disturb people.

Combine that with the fact I'm paying good money and then have to sit through 15 minutes of previews? Yeah... fuck that. There are very good reasons people pirate films... so yeah I have no problem waiting for a nice blu-ray rip to show up online a few months after release.

I can give the theaters a pass on the overpriced food because its optional and there as a total convenience.... but start the movie on time, and kick out anyone who won't shut the fuck up.

Seems like a really good price. Say $10 a ticket and I have 5 daughters would cost $70 for all of use and close to $35 for concessions. We would be close to $100 for 7 of us.

I will pay $30 if I can not just view, but own the movie on release day so I can see it as often as I want.

Otherwise, get bent.

So 45 days late is the new early?

GTFO I'm not paying for anything I don't actually get to own.

I just take the kids to the drive in (they still exist). It's always a double feature and it's always new movies. Last weekend we saw beauty and the beast/ Kong skull Island. 10 bucks for a car load and bring your own snacks or buy theirs.

Hell yes I would.

$30 for as many people as I can fit in my living room and not having to spend money on gas or theatre snacks. And I can avoid traffic and shitty people in a theatre and not worry about inconvenient showtimes?

That's a bargain. Yall are crazy.

None but that's when you sneak stuff in. We have a five guys near the one I go too and normally sneak a entire meal in during movies.

This is laughable. It encourages more people to pirate thus a loss of sales. Movie studio execs need to get their heads out of their asses.

Seriously this is at minimum whats on one of those movie industry idiots to do list for the project: it will only be 1080p, it will be streaming only, it wont have a preload option so at minimum the first minute will be chunky barf pixelation, it will be locked down to only certain "smart" devices or the only a PC with Kabby Lake is good enough BS, it will need GPS to make sure you're not in a public place, and require access to a camera to make sure you're not showing it to too many people.

30 to 45 days is not close enough to release day for me to pay $30. If they wanted to do the 2nd week of release I'd pay $30.

It's $30! Grab some friends and split it. My theater room would love t his.

I hate your kind :shifty:
