Staff were informed of the shutdown this morning, according to a reliable Kotaku source. Some 150 people were laid off, and both of the studio's current projects--Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313--were cancelled. Disney will still use the LucasArts name to license games.

And

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games," Disney said in a statement. "As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

I have some of my fondest memories in gaming thanks to LucasArts. In the last decade however they've been pretty sub par in many games ( I did enjoy Star Wars Unleashed however). We all knew unless the quality of games started to improve that LucasArts would not last but its still incredibly sad to see Disney of all corporations , shutting it down and not Lucas Entertainment its-self.

This could be a good thing though , we could finally get the Star Wars games we can get excited for if given to the right developer.

Wow. First THQ, now this.

I admit that I haven't been interested in anything from either company for a long time, but why not just have these teams make Disney games instead? They haven't been the greatest game makers lately, but they sure as &%#* beat Disney's :p

I'm sad because I've been playing lucasarts games for YEARS. However, now we might get some decent sequels.

Here's hoping an Xwing/Tie fighter game comes out of this....

There's a rumor (or "made up shit") that if Starwars 1313 survives, it will be 'retooled' to feature an existing well known character, because Disney feels a new character would not be able to move enough copies.

Do you feel that sickness in the pit of your stomach?

Hey Disney, maybe make it a Wii exclusive? That will sell them copies! Idiots.

After Republic Commando, they sort of lost their way. Force Unleashed, like the CGI animated series, was shoe horned into the time between episodes, and completely fudged the canon up , and the second one was bloody short and disappointing (an overpowered force user couldn't deal with Boba Fett, and what was stopping Vader from just shouting NO!!! and twisting the restraints and everything else around him to scrap?)...Still getting rid of Hayden Blackman could be a plus "Oh we couldn't put dismembering of enemies into Unleashed, it's too brutal", oh here's some dismembering of enemies in Unleashed II...Not that we couldn't have done that in the far superior series of Dark Forces II, or Jedi Knight II...Or Jedi Knight Academy, eight years earlier.

I was kind of looking forward to 1313, didn't hear anything about the other game until now.

At least I bought everything Lucas Arts made that was good, Entire X-Wing series, Dark Forces series, Republic Commando, the Indiana Jones games, Day of The Tentacle, Grim Fandango, the Monkey Island games, Sam & Max, even Shadows of The Empire was good...Force Commander, and Battle For Naboo was a POS that was free (they couldn't get rid of them any other way, besides throwing them in the bin) with the slightly terrible Phantom Menace game.

Does this mean the Yoda statue and the coffee shop are getting ripped out of the Presidio in SF as well?

Well I have confidence in Disney since they are so well known for making great games...like...um....yeah, I have nothing. Only thing I know them for is dissolving the developers of their games once they have finished the job, the guys that made the Tron Evolution game, I think they got rid of the group that made Epic Mickey 1 & 2 as well, only game I can instantly recall is Fantasia from the mid early to mid 90's, and I played that a handful of times.

weird what a waste. Confusing because they were pretty deep into 1313. I'm told Disney is a great company to work for that Lucasarts has pretty much turned to shit so hopefully the layoffs aren't more muddled than we think and something decent will come out of this.

Fuck them. This is what they deserve for not releasing a 99% completed Battlefront 3.

Simple question: will we get Jedi Knight 3, X-Wing 2, and Battlefront 3 from Disney as a result of this?

If not...then...well, fuck.

Seeing as how there have been almost nothing but horrible decisions in recent years from them, good riddance. I'd rather they NOT make games than produce garbage. The actually talented people can move on to positions elsewhere, and possibly be part of a team who licenses them later to do the franchise justice.

Exactly, I don't see how this is a bad thing.

Doubtful that Disney would do it in house, but it's possible that a 3rd party developer could get a license from Disney to do it. Now they just need to make an MMO style x-wing/tie fighter arcade simulator.

Good riddance, nothing good for a long time. Hopefully this means that they farm out some IPs and take advantage of better developers.

Was just thinking. Colonial Marines looked amzing ... we found out it was all fake to show what it might look like. 1313 demo footage may of all been pre-rendered to show you what it may look like.

Wait a minute, didn't Disney JUST buy them?
Wow that was fast
Disney probably figures they can make more money licensing Star Wars games to developers than they can by making the games themself. There is very little risk in a licensing model.

LIkewise. I wouldn't mind Bioware grabbing it, actually.

Yeah that would be a good thing and I don't think it's totally impossible for that to happen however unlikely. They have experience with the Star Wars license and with the shooting genre ala Mass Effect 3. I think they could finish it up and do a good job with it. It's a pretty logical choice really.

One would think they would just buy the licenses?
Perhaps George Lucas is the real genius here....

All I want is for Disney to release the ORIGINAL Star Wars trilogy remastered in their theatrical versions. Had to pass up so many re-releases, including the recent Blurays which changed even more things...

Probably better off in different hands anyway. Weird that they grabbed star wars but let lucas arts go. Someone wanna explain that?

I didn't think much of the upcoming 1313 anyway. Looked like Uncharted meets Mass Effect.

I knew disney was going to ruin Star Wars.

You want the banding around ships? You want that awesome original celebration ending to Return of the Jedi? You want the emperor in Empire, which was nothing like the real emperor?

The "noooo" Lucas didn't need. But some of the changes were definitely needed. At least it was Lucas' intellectual property and his vision.

I'll take that over whatever Disney is going to do with the franchise.

Over paid staff making unprofitable games for the past 10 years ... think that is about it.

Controlling the IP from a standpoint ensures they can make better developer decisions.

Not all the changes are positive but most of them are. Cloud city actually looks like it's a city in the clouds and not a network of underground tunnels with no windows. The Wampa scene was improved, matching Fett's voice made sense, the space battle against the original Death Star had more scale as there were more ships in the remastered version, etc. The only changes I don't care for are the stupid dance number in ROTJ, the Cantina scene with Han and Greedo, and the stupid "Noooooo!" in ROTJ.

My hopes for another Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle have been dashed. So long LucasArts, the journey has been fun. :(

Lucas arts hasn't made a good game since the 90's. so its not a real loss. though i was interested in the M rated one that was coming out, since that hadn't been done before. They may sell the rights to the games that are in development right now.

i don't care what Disney does as long as they keep George Lucas the hell away from it. that guy is a fucking butcher.

Yeah it's hard to disagree with that.

Lucas Arts pretty much farmed out all recent games as liceneses to other studios in the past several years anyway. Their meddling forced rushed projects, and all they did was 'me too' clones with Star Wars licensing, resulting in shitty games. Want to impress me? Take what was the beginnings of something epic, the Space Expansion of Star Wars Galaxies and make a stand alone space MMO with fighters and capital ships and do something unique for once. Else GFY...

I cant remember when they put out any games that was not starwars. That is all they made for like 7 years and nothing else. they didn't make anything like sam and max anymore so they was pretty much already dead.
