I want to know which is the best half life made so far. I've played through Half life 2 but none of the others.

I dunno, I think despite its criticisms, HL2 was probably the better of the two. The environments made me feel like I was "there".

I had the most fun with HL2 and HL:EP2. Still waiting on EP3 though

Edit: Not trying to start a fight but first half of HL1 was decent but for me went off track after that. Similar to what others say about Farcry.

All of them, HL1, HL2, and HL2 ep 1 and 2 from beginning to end. Even the HL1 expansions (blue shift, etc) are worth playing.

Definitely 1 for me. I can't see someone that started with 2 really understanding why but HL2 was a letdown for me. HL2 was fun for one playthrough but I share the opinion that it is more tech demo than game. My disappointment with HL2 is comparable to that of Oblivion vs Morrowind and Gothic 3 vs Gothic 1 & 2.

I've never felt the urge to replay HL2 all the way through. I always get bored with HL2. I go back and replay HL1, OpFor, Blue Shift, and a mod called USS Darkstar every few years. I think I like Opposing Force the most. I also prefer Team Fortress Classic and Day of Defeat over their Source counterparts. I do like CS Source more but I mostly just play zombie maps.

I decided to look for some good HL1 single player mods. Here's what I am going to check out:
Azure Sheep
The Gate
Afraid of Monsters
They Hunger
Half-Quake

Just play them all if that's what you're getting at, honestly they're all good and worth it.

First was much better than second at the time of each release! The second felt very limited and on rails to me! Ie being outside and having the illusion of an open world but bumping up against unseen walls or fake texture dead ends constantly. It seemed a bit like a cheap funhouse.

The first one, and the expansion Opposing Force. Never really got into the second and its episodes for some reason.

HL2 has some of the best art direction I have ever seen in a game.
That said, I really consider both games to be fairly = for their respective time periods.

The HL run of games are all linear FPS. What did you expect?

hl1 environment of research lab and concerete corridors and steel loaned itself to linear quite well! hl2 open environments with fields and cities, seemed incredibly fake and limiting by comparison when you realized you could see for miles but only walk or drive in invisible narrow corridors the entire game!

Do also remember that farcry came put between the two games and it made the hl2 border limitations all the more disappointing. Farcry was an amazing game for its time! Who doesn't remember sniping across the island from a clifftop? You could go anywhere you wanted. The only border I remember on that game was when you tried to swim put to sea.

At the same time you still had to go back and do FarCry's missions, in linear order. There were few you could skip, and a few you could finish out of order, but that was it. It was a play ground that you could run around in, but you still had to go to the start line and follow it to the the finish line to complete the game.

Nothing against that, and HL2 prolly could have allowed for more exploration, but from the day they punched in the first line of code, they were making a linear shooter. They were not going to change that because FarCry (an excellent game btw), came out between their starting and finishing.

Yeah in hindsight HL1 obviously looks inferior to 2, but when it was shiny and new it was special. Although far from perfect, because the whole Xen thing was a bit shit and the ending was pathetic, just like HL2's. But there was a simplicity to the storytelling and a stark, clean design which really struck a chord with me (especially that intro sequence). HL2 tried to be clever with its willfully passive"storytelling" but fell flat for me. It was a fantastic bit of tech at the time, but ended up feeling shallow because it tried too hard to pretend it wasn't.

For sheer "holy crap" moments HL1 for sure.

I remember being giddy/scared/excited when the squad soliders would coordinate their attacks and royally mess you up.

If you haven't played any of them, its easy... just play the first one, then the 2nd :) and all the packs in between.

I've played through all of them (except Blue Shift) and I can easily say they're all great games. Can't really say one over the others because there's moments in each where I'm 'wowed'. Opposing Force was especially awesome since it was from another perspective. The great thing about HL1 is that there was a good diversity of enemies. HL2 and the episodes didn't really have much enemy diversity (that I can recall). There were more than a few, but it seems like HL1 had a lot more.

For multiplayer, still Hands down HL1.. Fast paced hldm... more than 12 years and still playing that shit with friends once in a while..
And Adrenaline Gamer mod is even faster and enjoayable.
Graphical wise and singleplayer wise HL2 might be better but will never beat the legacy of HL1 for me...

I thought 2 was great! If HL1 is better then it must be a blast!
