Windows 8 Milestone 3 build has been released to Microsoft Connect partners for the first out-of-building viewing evaluations. With the initial release, more screenshots and production leaks will be showing up giving some insight into what we may expect from Windows 8.

It’s important to remember that these leaks are based on very preliminary builds of the operating system. Microsoft isn’t talking about Windows 8 features yet, and a lot could change before the expected release sometime next year.

I'm guessing most people aren't reading the article since there is no bitching about MS bringing the Office ribbon interface to Windows.

However now that I've mentioned it here.... :)

Also, where's the "XP forever" crowd???

I'm actually excited about the ribbon interface, I like it.

meh, Im really happy with 7 and everybody else I know. There wont be many reasons to upgrade, maybe 7 will be the next 'XP' in the sense that it will be so entrenched that it will be here long after its intended life span.

/hates ribbon as well

But as stated before "product isnt final, alot can change!"

Great more stupid shit that will interfere with my work by putting shit that circumvent security. Effin MS to put in live, I bet tons of admins will love love this live bullshit integration.

I do like the Live Photo, I use it manage all our pictures and it automatically gets added to the homegroup so you can access all the pictures from any computer in the network.

I think Vista was just a bad rollout. Hardware manufacturers didn't have good drivers ready.

I think they found out with the XP - Vista transition that they have to keep releasing new products or they stagnate. They're bound to make a profit on it, so why not?

Half the reason XP got so entrenched was that it was the current version for twice the normal amount of time. Unless Win8 is massively delayed that's not going to happen again so it's never going to achieve the dominance in OEM boxes. For enthusiasts, the limiting factor is probably going to be W7-home only supporting 16GB of ram. High end gaming boxes are already getting there and in another year or two cheaper parts will push 16gb to the mainstream. Want/needing more than 16 will be a year or two behind that, and when forced to choose between $100 for win8-home (presumably with a 32-64gb limit) or $200 for Win7-pro (192gb) most people are going to migrate to win8, the same way we mostly went to vista64 instead of scrounging up XP-64 licenses.

I will NEVER willingly buy an OS that uses the Ribbon Interface. I will stick with W7 for years if I must.

The Ribbon is ok as long as they give us the ability to turn it off. Some of us have been pleased of late with Microsoft's minimalism feel. This would be a major step backwards.

Very nice for the new crowd though.

It's amazing just how misunderstood particularly by experienced folks the Ribbon is, at least the version of it in Office 2010. As your screen shot shows it can be minimalistic or verbose, is great for feature discoverability and is very customizable. In Office 2010 it is possible to totally redefine the interface or extend it and it can be designed to work well with touch screens. Indeed an application could have multiple interfaces, one for a keyboard and mouse setup and another for a touch screen for instance,

As the Ribbon becomes more mature and broadly adapted and better componetized so that third parties can use it like any common Windows control I think the naysayers will begin to accept it as we all have classic menus. The Office 2010 Ribbon is superior to classic menus for applications like Office that are function rich.

The one, most super ultra important thing for me in Windows 8 is Multiple Desktops being implemented natively and properly.

Central application update repo which allows one to choose which to update would rock as well.

Total customization, including the login window/boot screen/etc, gnome style

That's it really. Other than that, get the stability even more down and we have a winner!

Oh, and also add easy ways to separate partitions:

a users partition/programs partition/etc.

Windows needs some linuxification IYKWIM

If people stopped bitching about the ribbon and actually gave it a fair chance they would realize just how good it is.

Windows 8 now comes with many more confusing flavors.

Like...

Windows 8 homeless edition
Windows 8 music edition
Windows 8 video edition (Netflix is blocked)
Windows 8 Too much money edition
Windows 8 Bing Bling edition

Lets see, no, no, no, no, and um no.

Stay with Linux if you want linux.

Microsoft will never add an central update server to hold the updates for ever single piece of software ever created by every single company in the world.

There is no real need to change all of that stuff. if you really want to though there are ways.

Stability is fine with windows 7. you are either running shitty software or hardware if you notice issues.

no we don't need 35 partions on a computer. Given that you can't just copy the programfolder from one computer to another and have everything work that is pointless to put it into a different partion as it does you no good without the registry. 1 for the OS, 1 for data is fine. if you do decide to do so, you can redirect user profiles to another harddrive other than the C drive.

A centralized repository of updates for all Windows applications and drivers just isn't feasible and would be an administrative nightmare. I think it makes more sense for applications to keep themselves updated as most good applications do these days.

Also in this age of the iPad the average user isn't looking for Linuxfication.

Ribbons are far superior to the interface they replaced. Virtually everyone who tells me they hate ribbons simply decided after using Office 2007 3 times that they hated ribbons and were never going back.

Nope...... I'm using 2010 now, it's good. But the menu system were way better. That said 2010 isn't bad. But 2007 was a total POS.

I'm trying, but fucking Microsoft is monopolizing. If only developers made games for Linux. And Photoshop.

A centralized way to update everything on your computer would be 10X better then having these fucking apps that run in the background, just to check. Also, would be great for game developers if both ATI and Nvidia's drivers were also available from Windows update.

Remember, Joe Six Pack doesn't know about application or driver updates, unless it's from Windows Update.

Cause Windows 7 knows no evil. Speaks no evil. It especially doesn't hear any evil.

Give me a break. I just spent my entire day trying to fix standby and hibernation issues with Windows 7. From what I've searched on Google, I'm not the only one.

Linux comes with an amazing partition manager. Windows comes with shit. There are many instances where I need ways to partition something.

For example, Android owners who seek to increase the performance or storage of their phone, may need to partition their SD card. Another reason to have a partitioned hard drive is for security reasons.

I was very skeptical when Inventor went to the ribbon interface. I have to admit after using it for a few months, it is a MUCH better interface.

As far as windows 8, "meh". It's an operating system. There's only so much awesomeness it can have.

I'll admit that person is me.

I get drivers for my GTX460 from windows update ;)

I just shrunk my C: partition on my 1TB, to make room for 2nd partition, which I then formatted to NTFS and am now transferring files to it, shrinking my C: partition even further and expanding my 2nd partition to transfer even more files, all from within Windows :)

Meh, quite happy with Windows 7. Hopefully Windows 8 will continue that trend.

The ribbon is cool once you get used to it. It freaked me out when they first started demoing office 2007. Couldn't format any word files for shit. Got the hang of it and works great. The wife picked it up even faster than I.

Also I'd like to see an option that can combine partitions without erasing data.

Get a clue, windows has partitioning built in.clearly you hate windows and clearly not used it very much, so why not just leave this thread and not come back?

as for Windows 8 being Vista 3.0? love to hear why...

Microsoft is like *the best* company of all-time, IMHO. Don't you guys agree?

I do, they donate millions to charities, make an OS that is compatible with 99%(guesstimate) of all computers in the world. and get this they actually patch stuff inside of sweeping it under the rug(Apple).

Sure they have their faults, but show me one perfect company? Overall MS is one of the better companies out there. IMHO.

Real Nvidia drivers? Like the ones that come with OpenGL and even the Nvidia stuff that comes from Nvidia's driver package?

I can get ATI drivers off Windows Update, but it's not the same thing as the driver packages that ATI offers. I doubt it performs the same as well.

buy microsoft products, you help people.

essentially, we as microsoft consumers are actually helping people in a deeper donation type of way.
our hard earned money goes to buy entertainment goods AND fighting malaria!! suck it!
