According to SWEClockers (translator required), Crysis 2 will be DX9 out of the box with DX11 support coming later via patches. Thanks to forum member Brownstone for the link.

At a presentation to Nvidia's new graphics card in the GeForce 500-series revealed that Crysis 2 initially will not include support for DirectX 11, instead get PC gamers to make do with the six year old DirectX 9.

Wow. Crytek is really betting the farm on the consoles, huh?

The PC game industry is in shambles and this proves it.

I hate consoles for what they have done to PC games.

"At the end of the day, companies need to make a profit.
Making crysis 2 playable on cross platform insures higher sales.
As for DX9 only, who cares! Have you actually watched someone play a fps game, or any game for that matter?
I don’t know why they bother spending the time and money adding all the bells and whistles into the game, when most don’t even pay attention to all the detail in the first place, maybe the first few minutes, but after a while its just run and gun. My son buys games and plays them for hours until he beats the game, then he sells them @ gamestop to buy another one. He doesn’t pay attention to all the detail of the game, he just blurs through it. That is what most console gamers do.
I love attention to detail. Let’s take GTA IV, my son just rushes through it, while never noticing the detail and atmosphere of the city.
When I play GTA IV ( on PC ) I love to walk around and explore the whole city, listening to the people and enjoying the amazing detail of the game.
Hell I still haven’t beat the game, because I like to enjoy the whole atmosphere of the game. My son like most gamers just doesn’t appreciate all the little details that painstakingly went into GTA IV. If you’re like me, we are in the minority when it comes to games.
If you want to make money in the gaming business, you need to cater to the masses, not a minority of pc gamers with cutting edge hardware.
I remember when pc games were all about playability and the graphics were limited by hardware. Now games are getting dumber and graphics are getting almost realistic. PC games died a long time ago, with the creation of the 3D graphics chip."

Why is this? This is happening more and more, also would this also fall under the ship it and patch it after the fact?

This is all over the crymod forums. The admins cant lock the threads fast enough. About the low-rez demo textures, encrypted .cgf files, lack of graphical tweaking options..etc, etc. (this obviously explains that, lol!)

Wondering if it was a decision in order to still make the (already delayed from the original "holiday 2010") ship date. Who knows, but if this is really true. Wow

hmm lets see how long have they been working on this game? maybe 2 yrs or so right. they could of made 10 or 11 support but nooo. they cater to bullshit console. will not spend my hard earned pennies for a bullshit title like this one.

Do you think AMD and Nvidia like this??

you would think the pc hardware industry needs to work together with developers to make games over the top and demanding to keep the industry flowing look at the first crysis people bought 8800 ultras just to play the game. then once people have the hardware they buy games. Its a viscous cycle that many of us know all to well. But It doesn't help that people can rock most games with a 8800 gt and who doesn't have one of those with dust on it in their basement closet?

Oh well guess I will have to wait for battlefield 3.

No.

Yes.

The PC gaming industry is far from in shambles. It is not dead as so many people would like to believe. There are still decent or good games that come out that are not consolized. If you look at FPS titles only, you have a closer to valid argument, but even there we still have some excellent titles to play.

DX9 out of the box for this game? Very disappointing. However, are you/we really that surprised? Honestly this game was crossed off my list quite some time ago, or perhaps never made it on.
Crysis was something I looked forward to, it pushed technology limits at the time and the game was decent. Everything since then by this company has been dumbed down and geared at the masses or a different target group entirely (consoles). Am I sad? not really.

As for DX9 only, who cares! Have you actually watched someone play a fps game, or any game for that matter?

I care. I think that better graphical effects add a lot to the environment and there are games out there that do make use of this. Even with DX9 some of the heavier effects are useful. DX10 added more effects, DX11 makes those same effects more efficient. This should mean that more game developers start using them for a better atmosphere & effects.

*insert BF3 comment*

Wow... that made me LOL. I will be boycotting this title if that is the case.

Being multiplatform does NOT insure higher sales. The first game sold over three million units with Warhead selling over 1.5 million. Most games released to market, console or otherwise, either fail or barely make their money back (or barely make a profit if you want to say it in a more positive light). There is never a guarantee that something will sell well and Crytek is trying to bank on over three million in sales will they have seemingly done everything they can to piss off PC gamers and burn a bunch of bridges with them since the release of the original game.

where have you been under a rock? Consoles are hated but lets face it, their prob easy to code the game for those systems. Also cheaper for the game developer to code their games towards it. In the end its a business and they need to make the money. With the record profits the COD titles have made more companies will follow more suit towards
console systems and the port them towards pc users.

don't like it don't buy nothing sends a message like not buying their games.

Ridiculous. Crytek is 2011. Get with the times. DX9 was released in 2002 so its almost a decade old API. This console crap is seriously starting to destroy my love for PC gaming.

Consoles cost more money to develop for. Easier, yes due to there only being one configuration, but not cheaper. There are lot of fees involved with developing a console game that simply don't exist for PC games.

That worked really well for Epic with UT3... and id with Quake 4... and Gearbox with SupCom 2... ect.

There are a lot of developers who are really bad businessmen. They don't understand their own strengths and weaknesses. I think a lot of time the feel like their game should have done better on the PC, and then blame the fact that it didn't on piracy. Then they think that simply releasing the next game on consoles is going magically make it a triple A title.

They don't realize that they just aren't making game that command the sales figure that they expect. It's often that they have a niche appeal due to their game's genre or poor execution is certain areas. (For instance, Crytek has never ever made a remotely good MP game, but they always say that their next game is going to have an amazing MP)
When they go multi-platform, they alienate they inexplicably cut corners on the PC replace that save a trivial amount of development time and completely alienate their core audience. Everyone thinks that their game can be the next Call of Duty, and they flush their franchises down the toilet trying to make that happen.

wait a sec, didn't nvidia pay crytek 1m dollars too? what the heck was that money used for then?

In this case, going multi-platform was the right idea. They need that COD cash infusion to really stretch their legs in their other endeavors.

DX9 at release? Oh well no biggie. 2011 has a ton of great games coming out. I'll just wait when it goes on sale and DX11 gets offered. I'm still excited for this game and this news has no real effect on me. Plus you got BF3 coming soon... Take your time Crytek and do it right. Peace.

It definitely is cheaper because they have one standard set of hardware to code, troubleshoot and support.

I do feel for them trying to make games work on an almost infinite set of PC hardware configurations... Intel vs AMD, NVidia vs AMD, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Linux (can't guess how many distros there are), Motherboard Chipsets, etc,etc

But dang it, I want an original game worth playing. We need a new Genre and not one that is flinging birds at stuff.

I guess the console port won't be totally complete until later...

Rumor: PC sales will tank and piracy will be blamed. PC gamers will be labeled as dishonest whiners.

Consoles sales will be mediocre, lack of complete consolization will be blamed. Crysis 3 will be an iPhone game. EA and Crytek will take a dump on their own chests.

Considering that most people thought the DX9 version of Crysis with pseudo max settings looked just as good as DX10, I doubt a lot of "enthusiasts" here really care.

You are completely ignoring things like royalties and licensing fees that don't exist on the PC, along with SDK costs being significantly higher.

Considering the MP demo looks worse than Warhead I'd say that increases the people that care.

It was probably used for that warning I got when I started the demo yesterday that stated my Radeon 5870 was not supported and may result in crashes.

I think MP always looked worse than the single player game though. I distinctively remember motion blur being forced off when I played the original MP. No doubt other options as well.

Even my brother, who is an avid console gamer believes consoles are holding PCs back and I think it's a no-brainer. I Dled the demo and the graphics aren't all that great. I doubt DX11 will change this much anyways.

I honestly don't care that much (see DX10 version of Crysis), but I also don't think that the consoles are going to be a magic bullet for this game either. My console-only friends don't really care about it at all. To them it's always been "that so-so game that nobody can run very well" and that's still what they think of it after 4 years.

there maybe fees but I bet there is also a lot of incentives from the console makers towards them. Example, gta 4 they have a ton of cash thrown their way for exclusivity.

Its been awhile since I played Wars, but I think it did look better than the Crysis 2 MP demo. Though with the demo having insane amounts of light bloom and motion blur its really hard to tell and tends to make the game look a lot worse than it probably is. Texture work isn't the best in spots, but I'm picky about that stuff.

Well for the DLC at least. Still that only happens with some games, its not something that always happens.

After hearing how they were rejiggering the nano-suits, this latest revelation doesn't surprise me at all. It seemed pretty clear that they were changing things up for consoles, and this just confirms it.

I wasn't sure if I was going to get this game, especially after hearing it wasn't a direct sequel from the original game (as far as I can tell, it's not the same protaganist as in the first game... Nomad?)

Yeah, Crytek kept saying "trust us" to the PC crowd, but after this, I really can't make myself do that. Sorry, Crytek, but you have only yourself to blame. I hope you make a lot of money with Crysis 2, but you wont be getting any from me.

Boycotted.

really...what the hell. They could've used dx10 and i wouldve been fine but direct x 9....what????

People spend hundreds, and thousands on video cards and getting their systems up to date for nothing. I feel like selling my 2 6950's and getting a cheap card! Thats what sucks, I have $600 in cards and not even $600 worth of quality games worth playing!
