4x GTX 480 SLI (+OC)

You can go 5970x2 and a GTX 480 for physX, but will that outperform 4x GTX 480?

I was wondering as well, would 2 5970 TOXIC be better than 4 GTX480. If the TOXIC price is around 1000$ then 2 of those would cost like 4 GTX480 (at MSRP of 499$). Would love to see what is really better for gaming for a real enthusiast, ATI or Nvidia. Well the TOXIC would be better at least for clocking since it got a better cooler, but i guess an enthusiasts can get liquid cooling :p

God all you kids need to go outside, goto a bar or something and leave the guy alone. his money who the frack cares what he does with it. Personally i'm interested in the sheer insanity of anything this machine does.

He's got money to burn, he chose to do it this way, and that is his choice, you don't like it, DON' T FRACKING POST.

Amen brother, I posted this in another thread, but I feel that it applies here.

Wha? [H]folk complaining about upgrades?

Yeah, this is par for the course anymore.

I say Kyle creates a separate site, and call it, [F]laccidOCP. Where all of the fucking pussies can go talk about power consumption, socket travesty and alike.

In this case is more than this. We're talking about actually being able to turn on the rig and supply it enough power to RUN. This rig ALONE when running at max power would need to be on its own circuit in a normal house probably. This explains why: http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/maxload.html

And as others have pointed out half of what he said is was trying to do doesn't even work. As it not supported by the drivers.

No SLI PhysX, no nVidia surround, no fire insurance. Those are the only things wrong with this, otherwise...benches please!

I'm curious how much more the electricity bill would be in one month if this beast was run at full load.

l m f a o. /end thread

But the real question is, can it play crysis at 800x600 with all the eye candy up?

I was thinking about picking up one reference 480, and strapping a couple of hot dogs to it in tinfoil to see if I could cook them.

With this rig... you might be able to foil cook a steak.

When I was a teenager I had a 1967 Camaro and I foil cooked a steak on the exhaust manifold by driving for an hour.

The more things change.... the more they stay the same.

you might be able to slow roast it but thats about it.. heat pipes only hit 150-170F under full load.. definitely not enough to cook a steak.. but good luck trying..

Very Rare Steak – 120°
Rare Steak – 125°
Medium-Rare Steak – 130° – 135°
Medium Steak – 140° – 145°
Medium-Well Steak – 150° – 155°
Well-Done Steak – 160°

And of course: he's got four 480s. I say it's doable.

An external conducting heat source, like a heat pipe, will not heat a steak to those temperatures. You would be lucky to get it to 90F in the center.

Well if the OP isn't going to say anything more its time to lock this thread. I think the steaks and hotdogs converstation puts a fork in, pun intended.

Nothing insane about it, but he's not thought it through. He should know that SLI PhysX dosen't exist and I hope he knows how much power he's drawing through his circuits and what they're rated at. I've not to date built anything nearly as power hungry (though I have a lot of stuff in my office) and power became a CRITICAL issue for me on my last build. I couldn't turn on things without CONSTANTLY tripping the breaker and why I spent $600 on a new circuit. Just to run my freaking computer.

When you build systems like this you simply don't plug them into a convential circuit without understanding the power implications cause they WILL show up.
$600!?! When I moved into my current house last year, I spent less than $200 to add in three new breakers, and 6 new outlets to support my office and my PC workshop in the basement.

Either you bought solid gold everything, or you paid someone else way too much to do the work for you.

I think the best bet for him is to install a dedicated 30 amp breaker, run some #10 wire, and make a dedicated outlet for his supercomputer. Total cost would be under $100. (Depending on length of wire needed from outlet to circuit breaker.)

Let's see this beast unleashed!

I say, more power to him. (pun intended.)

I also had some other wiring redone and some flood lights installed as part of the project. Should have clarified that.

Damn you guys. Now I'm thinking about recirculating the air from the exhaust back into the system and closing up all the other intakes.

Paint it pink and call it the EZ Bake Oven.

+1 to crackbone. All you guys bitching about power usage, sweet jesus. And calling for a thread lock? He just posted this last night.

Please read the thread. It's not just a simple matter of power usage. 4 480s in an i7-980x overclocked to 4Ghz reaches the limits of normal 15 amp house circuits. That rig when running at full would need to have its OWN circuit, nothing else. Period.

Few people are setup for this and its the #1 you have to take care of to make something like this work.

Heatlesssun,

We know. That's not what I'm talking about. I realize that this setup , if real, is pushing what typical home circuits are capable of. I'm skeptical of the claims big time.

My point is, and you should understand this, is , this is an enthusiast site. I'm getting real sick of the asshats that come around here and bitch and moan about someone dropping too much jack on a rig.

I have a problem with assholes that bitch when Intel sticks to their Tick - Tock development cycle. Honestly, I have a problem when people bitch about others pushing the envelope, whether that be a user or a company providing the hardware.

I've been frequenting this site for a long time. It used to be exclusively about pushing the envelope.

It's a god damn hobby. If you don't have the cash to pay to play, quit bitching about other people enjoying themselves. This isn't directed @ you Heatless, as I know you pay to play. I have a problem when someone calls you out because you have the jack to drop.

Don't like it? Get a better fucking job or STFU.

I read the thread. You posted this same thing six times, seven including the one I just quoted. No one has disagreed with you, it's going to require some power modifications. That doesn't mean a thread that isn't even 24 hours old and is obviously a lot of interest to people should get locked. Don't worry, if he has power issues you can wave your arms around and yell I told you so and have seven posts in this thread to prove it.

Yes I did say something six times curious that the OP NEVER responded back, hell its ePenis that he was whipping out, you'd figure he'd be more intrested in it than anyone else right? That's why this should be locked considering all the things he said that can't be done and couldn't demostrate how he was going to accomplish.

Hell I'm as curious as anyone as to how he was going to do stuff, because if it actually showed promise I might be intrested in doing the same thing. But this looks more and more like BS than a real attempt at building an awesome rig.

Actually, just route the exhaust from all four cards into and enclosure where your food is held externally. Then fire up fluidmark and wait for the wonderful aroma of your slow roasted dinner.

Someone buy him crysis/crysis warhead if he doesn't have it to do some testing :)

Good thing he has a 60Hz monitor so he can take advantage of the 400 FPS he'll be getting in every game.

LOL.

The amount of jealousy on this thread is beyond imagination....Jesus....enjoy it OP!

It has nothing to do with jealousy, not for me, its that what the OP is trying to do is TECHNICALLY IMPOSSIBLE. There's plenty of people here who can build the same rig and better even if they so choose, I simply want to see how he was going to get this to work like other here.

whats a "frack"?

A Frac is when an oil or gas well is "fraced" to stimulate or prolong oil & gas production. Special fluids are pumped into a wellbore with powerful hydraulic pumps to cause enough pressure to crack or fracture the formation. This process creates a plane of high-permeability sand, which usually allows the hydrocarbons to flow more freely into the wellbore.

HardOC[P]ussy ?

as for the system... better be gaming on at least 3x 30" displays..

Dude, he posted this thread at 8pm last night. Perhaps, just perhaps he has a job and when he gets off work he will continue this thread? You could be right, he may never post and if it had been a week or something I could understand the BS call.
