Star Trek Online Open Beta opens tomorrow

Actually people can have the same character names and ship names, just not on the same account as the names are tied to the account.

Is logging into the game still a bitch? I was able to create my character earlier today but I couldn't actually get into the game. Right now I can't check as I'm at work.

If you would read my post you would see that I wanted a Mirror due to high wait times, subscription only download mirrors, German/AUS/EU hosts, and "free" mirrors that make you register and wait in their queue for several hours. Your link did absolutely dick to answer my question.

Hey guy, I gave you the link to the official mirror list. You only mentioned 2 file sites that you tried, the link has 7 + torrent + their official downloader client. That not good enough for you? Do some leg work and find some mirrors yourself instead of whining for them here; like looking on the STO Forums. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, ya ungrateful bastard. :p

If you were smart, you would have got it VIA torrent the day before using the OP's link. Besides, what do you care? According to you it's not even going to be worth trying.

I absolutely do not like this game. It is the worst pay to play MMO I have played in years or perhaps even ever. I've seen just about every single star trek tv show and movie and loved them. I cannot stand this game. Combat is very bland and repetitive. Graphics are only average. So far, it does not seem like you can go off and explore like in almost all other MMOs.

Don't tell me it is just in beta, because it comes out in a couple weeks. It is not that I don't like space MMOs. I love them. I have two active eve online accounts on and off for 5 years, loved playing deadspace for years, and even enjoyed earth & beyond beta more than this game.

Where's the bridge camera view? Or you can only view in third person while piloting your ship? :(

So, no exploration in Star Trek game? Great.... that's killing the whole point of the game. Seems I'll be staying out from this MMO, I really wanted to play it tho, to get the thrill of coming into uncharted area of space, and behave like true Federation captain.

Why not just try it for yourself? I'm sure more beta keys will pop up before launch. So far, I really like the graphics -- but I havent had a lot of time to play. I will report back with my findings once I do.

To expand on what I said yesterday....

Ground - Very dull and repetitive. Typical talk to this guy talk to this guy then leave. Graphics are subpar at best and animations are crap.

Space - Still undecided. The graphics are better but the scale just doesnt seem right. Firefights can take FOREVER and at some points your one little ship is assigned to take on 5-8 ships at once. I really am not in love with the controls either.

Ground = D
Space = C
Overall = C-

I've been pretty wary with this game, and kept my expectations low after reading more and more about it. The comments here from those who've played it are starting to cement that 'bad feeling' that I've had.

Shame ;(.

I can only cling to the hope that it will somehow get better. I'd love to hear more peoples reviews though.

If I said my last name was Stark, would you know what I was talking about Direwolf20? :p

Why not just try it for yourself?

Easier said than done when it takes a seeming eternity to even download the damned thing. Getting keys is the easy part.

A lot of us are simply going to be at the mercy of the intel of others. I wasn't going to wait for a 50 hour download myself.

From what I have played so far. Absolutely terrible. The ground combat is some of the worst I have seen in the genre. The space combat was also bad, it had alot of potential but totally fell on its face. The game also lacks that special polish that games need these days to be successful. The animations were bad, the voice overs are horrible, and the game just lacks that correct "feel".

I still cant find a good tracker. I thought I would post up here (I don't see how I was whining) to see if anybody had a good mirror.

And yes.. according to me I think it will flop. I am just going off of just about every other MMO's history though. That doesn't mean I don't want to try it though. On top of that, don't get me wrong. Im not cheering for this game to flop, I would like to see another good MMO as much as anybody else. I just haven't seen it happen yet and history is a good judge of the future.

Thanks for posting your feedback. This is exactly why I refuse to preorder anymore. I'm sick of plunking down my hard earned money on garbage.

Why can't a developer other than Blizzard make a decent mmo?

Past MMO's that I have played or beta tested:

EQ1 - Got old after about a few months
EQ2 - YUCK
WOW - Great for awhile and got bored after a year.
Tabula Rasa - Words cannot describe how horrible this game was.
Planetside - You actually pay a sub for a multiplayer FPS LOL
Star Wars - Great enviroments (before combat change) and great community but got boring due to lack of content. The Jedi changes made the game unplayable for me.
City of Heroes - Was this game made to run on a browser cause it sure looks and runs like crap.
Age of Conan - So much potential but once you hit level 20 the developers got lazy.
Eve Online - Very pretty spaceship screensaver. The story is absolutely wonderful though. Very deep. No point to game other than ganking, boring missions and yes more ganking.

I was really looking forward to this game. I actually thought that some developer would finally do Star Trek justice and come out with a game that people would stick to.

I like the Fleet Action, funnest part so far...wish they would have voice chat.

Anyone know where the PVP element is, I know you can play as the Klingons, but where do we meet those players?

Unfortunately, your sentiments here are arguably the kind I've been running across the most here and abroad.

I've never bought into an MMO before due to my strong dislike of their pricing structure but if this game (had?) kicked ass I would have gladly made this my first MMO.

What a disappointment. Feels like running through "generic MMO" with Star Trek textures. Space combat has potential, but isn't quite right. It's far too easy to get adds with the rapid respawn time, and if you run away it takes FOREVER for them to leave you alone. Ground combat feels clunky as hell. Only one Tier 1 ship? Character creation is the best I've ever seen, however. Making your own alien is fun as hell. I had hoped this would rally my Trek enthusiast friends. Unfortunately, I think it may just do more harm to a franchise already curled up in the fetal position.

Wow ...

EQ was like the only MMO that is actually challenging PVE and didn't give you max level after a couple weeks. I really liked that part of it.

OMG, give me better maps. I started to head out away from the Fleet Action I was playing all of yesterday and part of this morning and I am now completely lost. The maps work worth shit, would help if there were a little dot on the galaxy map that says this is you. There is a north indication, but it seems that all the systems don't match up to the over world map...HELP! I'm lost, I don't have any major weapons upgrades and I am being pummeled by bad guys.

Are you on a mission or in the sector map? If you are in the sector map you cam press "M" and go to the far right tab, and click the name of a system you want to auto-pilot too. If you are not in the sector map but in a system, there is a button in the top right hand side of the screen that says warp.

I played for an hour last night. Had to restrain the rage though because of the lag. They did a good job on stress testing the servers if that was their goal.

As far as the game play goes the tutorial was exactly what I expected out of an MMO now days. fast respawn of mobs and taking you through the basics. the ground combat was pretty weak. For me this wasn't a gripe because that isn't why I wanted to play. I do think if they had gone with more of a fps style with an optional 3rd person view ground play would be more enjoyable. Space combat so far through the tutorial was fun! It was hard to get a feel for it though because of the lag. I also need to spend more time with the controls.

I have yet to do any episodes or the other game modes so I can't comment on those aspects at the moment. From what I have seen so far though, which is little, I would give it a B. I'm going to spend a few hours on it tonight and see what I think then.

Don't forget to air your grievances on the official forums and watch for Dev responses. Beta is a good time to say what you need to while sweeping changes can occur to the game without irritating a paying crowd.

Very likely.

Good.

Except it's a very important part of the game and if it basically is not up to par which is easily the consensus I'm gathering...that's a serious problem.

I do think if they had gone with more of a fps style with an optional 3rd person view ground play would be more enjoyable.

Then I'd be ready to buy it. That's the kind of control scheme I'd hope they were going to use at least for those sequences.

Even for space combat...use the mouse to aim, left mouse button fires weapon 1, right mouse weapon 2, etc. etc.

Why make it any harder than it has to be? Make it fun.

Can you describe what the controls are like more or less?

All feedback is appreciated. :)

As far as the controls for space combat.....

E - Increases your speed
Q - Decreases your speed
W - Point the ship down
S - Point the ship up
D - Roll the ship right
A - Roll the ship left
1 - Fire Forward Phasers
2 - Fire Torpedoes
3 - Fire Rear Phasers

My ship only had two phaser banks and one torpedo launcher. It consisted of me either using the mouse to maneuver by holding l+r mouse buttons or using wsad. Weapons were fired by using the number keys. I don't have my officer abilities yet so I can't comment. During the fight I was able to click my ship diagram and adjust power to shields. You are also able to route power to different systems such as engines, shields, etc... The controls were all right. I think it could of possibly been done better but at no time was I frustrated because I couldn't perform an action in a timely manner.

In regards to the ground controls. I could see how you view it vital. For me though I just never really pictured myself walking around firing my phaser. It was always dreaming about decloaking in a bird of prey and opening fire or fighting off the borg, etc... I won't know more until I get a chance to play again tonight.

Do the fight feel like Trek? Ya know, that epic feeling from ST VI, when Kirk was fighting the cloaked Bird of Prey, or when he was facing Khan? :)

And if you played Bridge Commander / Klingon Academy, could you somehow compare ship combat between those games and STO?

Instead of an MMO, I would have loved a co-op Star Trek game where you and a few buddies could control different aspects of the ship (pilot, weapons engineering/shields) and have ship to ship combat - use the transporter to board enemy ships once their shield were done, stuff like that.

I'm going to play the MMO tonight once I get home and have it installed, hopefully it's still entertaining for me!

Ok, great. Thank you for this.

You mind me bugging you for a list just like this for the ground controls? ;)

You can remap the keys and such if you want, right?

First thing I did was changed fire all weapons from alt+space to space, that way fire all torpedoes is ctrl+space, phasers is alt+spave and space is straight up bring some shit. Much easier then 1, 2, and 3 and most of the time ships are in range of more then 1 phase bank. Also helps with heavy foward facing weapons when you also have aft phasers that can support (put weapons with the biggest arcs in the back, can triple forard facing fire power).

Also, disable the cut forward movement if you get an incoming message...in a fleet action loosing all forward momentum while being asked if you wanna beam down can suck big time.

default:
fire all weapons: alt+space (they don't fing tell you this during the tutorial, changed to space)
fire all phasers: space (changed to alt+space)
fire all torpedoes: ctrl+space

How do you do auto attack nearest threat or auto attack targeted vessel, seems to fire all weapons and the cut after recharge?

^^ This I like. It sounds like you can really customize and tweak some things to your liking.

I think this is what you are looking for ;)

Thanks! I looked for that the other day and couldn't find it. I'll dive into it right away. :)

Well I downloaded it from fileshack overnight. I go to unzip it and I get an error that says unexpected end of archive. Awesome. I may give it another try tonight otherwise I'll probly just skip this.

Okay, so the consensus of opinion is that this game is garbage. But is it unfinished garbage that can be fixed given time, or is it just plain garbage.

I noticed that the developer has posted a message at their website in which they state that the open-beta 'might' cause some people some frustrations, who knows. The wording of their post makes me think one of two things: either these guys have been given a mandate by their bettors to release this thing unfinished, and they know damned well that's it's unfinished and are putting up a front, or they're just in denial.

Denial - it ain't just a river in Africa.

Or that they expected us to receive it better, and they are now scrambling to figure out how they can make things better before this becomes a flop.

It seems that its a mix between the two, not so much unfinished but some poorly implemented things. Havent played yet just been reading users opinions.

Just plain garbage. They took StarTrek and removed the most important thing from it: exploration and diplomacy and replaced it with senseless cookie cutter mission to mission to mission combat. That's all you do, mission and mission after mission and they get old after ... the 6th time. It's all combat and only that. Boring and totally non StarTrek.

They could've called it Spacefight online and nobody would've noticed that there's a StarTrek logo on it.

Oh no, if MMO's don't hold yoru hand, i.e. WoW, and constantly give you a bazillion quest to do, as the only means of progression, they suck!

Core gameplay is not going to change much in Beta. If this game is heavily lacking exploration things to do other than just instanced missions, then it's already done for.

Running back to quest NPC to get another mission and repeating 5x every time you sit down, and that's all you do, is fucking boring. I'd rather just be thrown into the game and allowed to fine my own way, or helped by friends, like EQ used to be.
