Got a 5850. Should I Keep It?

I ordered a 5850 through our Dell company account manager in November but cancelled the order on Dec. 7th when I read that shipment had been delayed until after Christmas. Then today I received a Dell box with a 5850 in it. I'm on the fence whether to keep it, sell it, or send it back. I'd keep it if I knew I wouldn't be billed for it, but I'm pretty sure I will be. Secondly, even though I got it at retail price ($259) the tax and overnight shipping bumpred the price to $300 so I can't resell it and make a decent profit. And finally, I've always had better success with Nvidia cards and my GTX 260 is doing great. So I have a big decision to make.

I dont think u will be charged.. my friend ordered a moniter from Dell.. and cancelled, came in and never got charged since..If u get "Lucky"

I've been a huge NVIDIA fan as well for a long time but their cards just aren't up to par anymore (for now anyways). That 5850 up up there with the GTX285 so its a very powerful card.

I just bit the bullet and ordered a 5870 to try out eyefinity. NVIDIA just isn't going to have such tech available and I've accepted that.

I was also nvidia fan and still am but they just pissed me off so much with all their bullshit. I used to have a 260 and now i have a 4890. I like the 4890 but what i really hate about it is that there are no physics and they cant produce good water graphics unlike Nvidia. I play gta the most so thats when physics come in and THERE IS A LOT OF WATER (sea) so yeah i might go back to nvidia.

None of the Grand Theft Auto games (or any other game with the acronym "GTA" that I can see) use PhysX, so it doesn't matter if you have an Nvidia card or not for that aspect.

The sad part about all this is if you wanted to do the right thing and send it back if it’s not in Dell's records they WONT take it back, to them it’s like it was never ordered.

Wait a sec, you paid overnight shipping for something that arrived a month after you ordered it? If anything I would at least try to call them up and see if they might refund you that shipping cost.

But really, if all you are using right now is a single GTX260, a 5850 should be a pretty nice upgrade.

I would keep it, its a nice jump from the 260.
you wont be sorry ..:)

If you don't want it, I'll BUY it from you, for real.:D
Price negotiable.

PM me if you want to sell it.

Thanks.

i'd keep it in the box for a week to see if they charge you. if they don't, well thank dell for the present!!!

this should be posted in the hot deals section!!!

I think it will be immoral if you do decide to keep and since you're even contemplating it, I think you should send it to me and I will make sure it gets into the right hands.

Mine, LOL

Dell won't care about you keeping this. In the overall picture, you getting a 5850 means nothing to them. It'll be more of a hassle for them to have it returned than to just let you keep this.

If you mean PhysX, GTA 4 does not use it.

You both are wrong, GTA does use physics, the are called Euphoria.
I know this because i play it and its not that hard for a little research.

PhysX is an implementation of physics, but not the only one (as you mentioned euphoria).

PhysX is exclusive to nVidia, but other physics engines are not exclusive.

In short
PhysX != physics

Back on topic. I'd only ship it back if they paid for the shipping to send it back, otherwise you should not have to pay shipping for their error.

Thanks for all the comments. I've decided to keep it and I'm going to install it tonight and run some benchies against my GTX 260.

Keep it and have fun...it will smoke your 260...and like you said, you won't be able to sell it for much more than $300 shipped anyway..

Yes sir, I could easily tell the difference when i switched GPU's.
you should stop typing right now. there is no physx used in GTA 4. whatever physics you saw while using the gtx260 you could also see on the 4890 in that game.

wat? PhysX /= physics...
jvz555 doesnt get it. we have gone back and forth in PM. I explained to him what physx was and that GTA 4 physics engine did not use it. I even explained to him that all the physics in GTA 4 is done on the cpu. he still argues with me and tells me that the physics are better in GTA 4 with an Nvidia card because of physx. he is clueless

Yeah, a quick look at wikipedia reveals that GTA IV takes advantage of the euphoria engine. The following is copied from wikipedia's page on the Euphoria engine. "Euphoria is a game animation engine created by NaturalMotion based on Dynamic Motion Synthesis, NaturalMotion's proprietary technology for animating 3D characters on-the-fly "based on a full simulation of the 3D character, including body, muscles and motor nervous system".[2] Instead of using predefined animations, the characters' actions and reactions are synthesized in real-time; they are different every time, even when replaying the same scene."

LOL WHAT! Dude are you serious, GTA water looks exactly the same running on both manu's. It doesn't use a physics based sea, or you can be sure that it would run at about 1 frame a minute considering that a game with a tiny amount of low-res physics water like Cryostasis runs at like 20-40fps on a GTX 260.

So if you want to dump ATI, go for it, but what you just gave is a non reason. GTA4 uses no GPU accelerated PhysX. It probably usese PhysX on PS3, maybe 360, but even if its implemented on the PC, it is purely CPU based (physx is just like havoc in that it is not tied to GPU's...most PhysX titles run physics solely on the CPU).

It doesn't use Euphoria for all physics IFIRC, just for character ragdolls. Like getting hit by cars, falling off of roofs, that stuff is Euphoria. It's dynamic physics based interpolated animation.

No no. You're mistaken. You're using the wrong word. He's a maroon. :p

it doesnt use Physx at all in any way shape or form.

EDIT: here is a list of all both software and hardware physx games. of course all the console games and many of the pc games are software low level based physx. that means that it doesnt matter what gpu that you use since its calculated on the cpu. there are only 7 or 8 pc games that even use hardware physx and thats the only time where having an Nvidia gpu helps. as you can see there is NO GTA 4 on there at all not even for software physx. also many of these games have not and may not ever even be released. http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_physxgames_all.html

Yeah. I see a lot of stuff when I eat the drugs too. One time I ate a poisoned potato and hallucinated stuff TRUE STORY BRAH!

Cool, so its all Havoc & Euphoria. From what I've seen devs choose Havoc over PhysX even though PhysX libraries are free on the 360 and PS3, which seems to indicate some advantage in either accuracy or speed that Havoc has. Never mind that if PhysX was featured on PC nVidia would probably make it a single core implementation ala Batman.

edit: And yeah man I think you should keep it. Even if you have to pay for it, make yourself a present. Maybe you could talk them down to giving you MSRP, being that it was a mistake on their end. I'm jealous I'd like to have it.

Thats real honest ...

I love people who go on about "doing the right thing".... what makes you think many company really "do the right thing" for their customers (price gouging and such), yeah a single 5850 is a drop in the bucket to them...so I say keep it.

thats no excuse.

Who gives if it's the company or you, or who's affected by it. No, you aren't taking food off of Michael Dell's plate, but at the end of the day it's still stealing something.

There may not be repercussions for the actions, but it's still thievery.

So yeah, feel free to keep the beast ass card, as long as you don't pretend like you're not doing anything wrong.

I know where the physics is that he sees different on his card, it is just in his head. JK_HAPPY NEW YEAR
