Foxconn Employee Commits Suicide After iPhone Interrogations?

After being interrogated, confined and having his home searched, a young man that worked for Foxconn committed suicide after a prototype iPhone went missing.

Foxconn has already issued a statement apologizing for the incident and admitting that a section chief of the Central Security Division, surnamed Gu, may have used "inappropriate interrogation methods" such as searching Sun's house, holding Sun in solitary confinement and possibly beatings. Gu has been suspended without pay and the company is internally investigating the Central Security Division.

My only thought was that the people responsible for Sun's suicide will crumble to the investigation and commit suicide. Then it'll be a crazy bureaucratic chain of suicides.

If this happened in the US, the entire management team and the "Security Division - WTF!!!" would be a smoldering mess already.

No country is immune from stupidity unfortunately. Just look at our own Blackwater USA security company.

I hope Foxconn get to the bottom of this and fire his security staff responsible before anyone else gets hurt.

ok so the guy was broken into and beaten ... how do we know its a suicide and not homicide?

Have you been watching bones lately?

How anal are apple's secrecty policies, this kinda makes me wonder if they pushed Foxconn to this level. Or if this was just a security jerk that thinks he is king of foxconn

Yeah he'll get fired... right after they use more "inappropriate interrogation methods" to figure out exactly what happened.

Except it it happens on American soil in Cuba, then it is business as usual.

I heard that Steve Jobs is extremely angry.......

that he can't do this to Apple employees suspected of leaking info.

Wait a second, where are all the assholes from this thread who will say that someone who commits suicide after being bullied is just a pussy anyway? Where are you guys? I know you don't think anything bad should happen to the guard. After all, he didn't do anything wrong.

Sad to think that someones life was worth less than a damn iPhone...

suicide is always dumb unless a nazi is ripping off your testicles and will be killing you soon anyway

Na they'd all get a job with Home land security or something close to it.

you must have really screwed up to kill yourself over an iphone.

that or these "interrogators" were quite good.

beatings oven an iphone? seriously? lock those criminals up.

I suffer from severe social phobia, and I have suicidal thoughts once in a while. However, it takes a really messed up event to push someone over the limit. The gap between thinking it and doing it is HUGE.

I really think there is a lot we don't know about the whole story. Even if they beat him, or used any other physical torture, that's not enough reason to make someone kill themselves. If anything, Sun would of killed Gu before committing suicide, just to make sure nobody else was hurt in the future.
I honestly think Sun was bullied daily, making him psychologically unstable. Nobody decides to commit suicide from one day to another.

Perhaps this is all part of a much bigger plan he elaborated in his head. Perhaps GU threaten him some way, maybe to kill his family or friends, or to expose him to the public about a lie. All of it, in exchange for information, or to cover up the truth about the missing iPhone. So eventually GU left him go, before anyone could notice what was happening with him. Sun realizes he might not have a second chance, or that the punishment might get worse the next time around. So he goes and kills himself, effectively saving his family and friends, and preserving the secret at the same time. As a added bonus, he possibly gets the person responsible in jail or in deep trouble, and ends the misery he was already on as well. Everything was perfect.

I don't know, maybe my imagination is running wild here. I just think is sad someone had to die. But I know for sure that it takes a HUGE step from thinking about suicide and actually doing it. So there has to be a bigger story behind all this.

To some people they can understand being pushed to suicide by physical, painful beatings ala this case, but they just can't comprehend being pushed to it by words.

Haha yea right. Foxconn is like the epitome of communist manufacturing. They even practically own the city where their headquarters is (i think that is where it is anyways). I used to work for foxconn refurbishing cellphones and when the iphone came out, one of my coworkers who was a lead process designer (she figured out the best ways to fix the phones and set up step by step breakdown and repair procedures, a cush ass job that I envied because I should have had it but refused to kiss ass every day like her) went to China to learn about the insides of the iphone. She said even the manhole covers were plastered with the Foxconn logo.

Anyone who applauds all Chinese success should be ashamed of themselves because much of it is founded on what amounts to indentured servitude or slavery.

You are comparing a myspace boyfriend with what would amount to breaking and entering, illegal search and seizure, illegal imprisonment, possible kidnapping, beatings, and all around torment and abuse.

You are a god damned fool.

Workers LIVE at these facilities. They are slaves to this corporation. Foxconn is NOT a nice company, and I know this from experience (which was merely a watered down U.S. version)

Except it it happens on American soil in Cuba, then it is business as usual.

I hope you are not claiming enemy combatants in prison are the same thing as employees of a company.

Then again some days I think the higher ups treat us the same. ;)

Sounds like an exciting place to work. But I think I stay at my job for now ;-)

Investigators are trying to figure out why his feet were incased in concrete when they found him.

You guys are also forgetting that suicide is more common over there when you disgrace yourself... I guess losing an iPhone is disgraceful.

Plus, the way other folks do interrogations is nothing like our nicey-nice crap over here... they probably don't even call waterboarding (which we think of as extreme torture, apparently... bah) torture. They're hardcore.

if only foxconn could use that much effort in creating some better quality products

Same thing? you mean humans .. I'm pretty sure they are, and as such are afforded basic human rights.

nothing will happen. The story will be forgotten.

many worse things have happened then vanished from spotlight and been ignored.
