Like the title says is there anything new out thats scary? The type of game where you're actually afraid to play with the lights out. Doom 3 sorta scared me a little with the monsters jumping outta you from nowhere. I'm looking for a good chill.

FEAR

Play it with a good soundsystem, or better yet, good 5.1 headphones in the dark for a good time. :)

Something new!!! Fear is old and i've played it twice already. It has no replay value for me.

A couple titles to check into if you haven't already played them:

Penumbra series
Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth

Also, have a look at The Hidden: Source - it's a Half-Life 2 / source mod that's pretty intense. Also, the Thief series of games definitely has its moments too.

Remember that old ass game, it was where you played as a paranormal investigator (or something), you had a dhampir as a side kick in one level, the developers of it made a "Blair Witch" game after it.

I want to say Nocturne?

That creeped me out back when I played it (on my TNT2 ultra)

Bioshock wasn't even that scary.

I was gonna say FEAR series and HL2 Ravenholm chapter but its been mentioned already.

Silent Hill 2 a bit older

Not PC but Resident Evil Rebirth for GameCube if you happen to have one. :p Not too scary but helluvalot of fun

Just got done playing it, man I loved it. So satisfying. Condemned was made by the same folks and engine and was quite a bit more scaretastic IMO, but FEAR had its moments.

+1 on Call of Cthulhu and Silent Hill 2. CoC singlehandedly got me into reading Lovecraft stories. It's not everyone's cup of tea though.

Bioshock is a horror game? that's new.
I would say go for this-
Undying
System Shock 2
Penumbra series
Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth

you could try out Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, it's a vampire rpg. I only played some of it but there is one level in an old mansion that with the lights out scares the crap out of you. It is a couple years old though but still a decent game if you're at all into rpg's.

You want scary, play Thief 3 through until you hit the Shalebridge cradel mission, if you like scares it would be worth playing the game up until that point just for that level alone, everything before it isn't scary but sets the mood and will allow you to get to grips with the controls etc.

Doom3 for leaping out of your chair moments, FEAR and it's expansions for tension and spine chilling terror, Condemned for really vicerol in your face nastyness and some really chilling moment, I dunno about the sequel I suspect its equally as good.

system shock 2 and udying two scariest games i have ever played. geniune not cheap scare tactics ala doom 3.

Older game that really gave me the shakes: The Suffering

You could find it on eBay, Amazon, etc. for less than $15.

Would System Shock 2 still have the same affect today as it did back then? I mean, we've been pretty spoiled with pretty graphics and effects, similar to how the original King Kong scared people back then but now it looks completely ridiculous by today's standards. I can imagine playing SS2 and being turned off by the lack luster visuals and just not being able to get into the game. Anyone else played it recently that can chime in on how well it holds up?

it all depends on the person, really. if good graphics have been known to immerse you in games in the past, you probably won't have a great experience. I always thought it would be cool, if I ever had a kid, to introduce him to the old games first, so he wouldn't be disappointed by graphics. he could experience those, and then the newer ones later. or maybe I just wish I could be brainwashed and start over as well.

^ It wasn't just the graphics, but seeing something new in a different way was part of the experience. Back then though they were pretty good graphics, but by today's standards it probably wouldn't be the same. HL1 immersed me fully, as did SS2, but today the graphics are really subpar and its hard to get into the game. Just curious if anyone who didn't play SS2 and has tried it recently would chime in as to how the dated engine effected the experience?

It's still only one of two games to literally give me nightmares. SS2 was freaky mostly due to the audio ambience and the awesome scripting/story telling. The graphics took a back seat, even when it was new it had outdated graphics. If you are going to play it, you need to have a good sound card and make sure you can enable all the 3d audio effects, which may not be possible in Vista without the additional programs from Creative or Realtek to re-enable the old audio system (alchemy and 3D soundback) which I haven't tried.

But having played it through many times, I now think the graphics almost add a special touch to it much like The Nightmare Before Christmas or any other animated show that was done unconventionally. All the right angles and textures seem to give everything it's own kind of twisted look. However you can hit up the forums that are still alive and kicking for some texture upgrades, a widescreen upgrade, etc.

Beware the monkeys, they guard their bags of chips with ferocity. I was so depressed when I beat that game.:( You can actually play co-op with three people, however you shouldn't do it your first time through because your friends will trigger things that you'll completely miss.

There's a video I stumbled across, I had forgotten about Aliens vs Predator 2 (never played 1). That game was pretty freaky too with you being so afraid to move around with the alien detector beaping and everything was so dark.

Resident Evil 4. Trust me as soon as you get rushed by a chainsaw wielding lunatic you will be afraid... you will be very afraid., on the Gamecube. Also on the Gamecube, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

If you are gonna get RE4, get it on wii.

+1 for Clive Barker's Undying. I refuse to finish that game, haha. It scared the pants off me.

I would get Penumbra, they're cheap indie games but have a creepy atmosphere and gameplay

+4 for The Suffering.. that was a very good game.. did anyone find RE the first one scary when the dog's jumped out.?

Fatal Frame 2 on Xbox.. or whatabout Clock Tower for psx........ what out for scissorman.!!!
Not a horror game but Tecmo's Deception: Invitation to Darkness... hehehe you get to torture ppl..

Another vote for condemed. Or you can always pick up a used GC and get resident evil 4!

Get a Wii and Resident Evil 4 and if you can find it, Eternal Darkness for Gamecube (you can play it on the Wii). Most frightening gaming experience you can have, especially if you have a good sound system.
