40% of College Students Plan to Buy Macs, Survey Says

I'm sorry, I don't think I have ever "really really really" liked an OS in my entire life. As long as it works and every single piece of software I have ever had the desire to use runs on the flawlessly, I am content.

(NSFW, but why are you watching Youtube at work anyway!?)

Probably outdated, but its still entertaining.

Personally I don't think Macs are for everyone. I think they're good for people who have no intention to do anything but the most basic of things, and have no intention to buy another computer within 5 or 6 years, if not longer, but still want something flashy.

You mean like large sections of people who work professionally in movies and music, writers, scientists, animators of all kinds, etc?

I'll give you some of that but the "scientists" crack is pushing it...Will Smith doesn't count.

sheesh, what is with all the mac hate in the [H] forum? Macbooks can run Windows just as well as any other PC based laptop....

and they have wonderful build quality for the price ... not to mention that yes, OS X *is* a nice operating system, and whether you people would like to admit it or not, it is gaining popularity fast and is a worthwhile OS to be familiar with....

Google is your friend. I won't hold your hand, there are excessive examples of researchers using OSX extensively out there. Go look.

Unless I can use the exact mobo, vid card, sound card, memory and processor I want in a computer it is worthless to me. I don't care how cool it looks,(though to be honest, I have a heavily modded water-cooled computer that looks pretty damn cool). If it can't run all the games and apps at the performance level I desire, then again - worthless.

because we often have to deal with mac zealots.

They say this untill they're parents have to buy them and realize how much they cost...

Being a member, no one uses Macs in the biological sciences. Not enough international support or compatibility.

40% of college students also admit to binge drinking.

Mystery solved...

thats because its a PC....apple lost street cred for being "different" when they switched to intel. might as well stop comparing PC to Mac in those stupid ads when the only real difference anymore is the OS.

they're no more better than any other PC company. their design isn't worth the price premium and neither is the OS. and speaking of the OS, its nothing special. but neither is windows...or linux. nothing has changed in terms of the GUI for a VERY long time on any of the OSes. but i'd rather use a mac for graphics work, windows for games, and linux for a web, mail, etc server. each one has its place i suppose and as long as it works then cool.

the reason i hate on macs is well...it isn't the hottest shit since sliced bread and people need to stop acting like it is. no it just doesn't work like they say. nothing a kernel panic with the little bomb to ruin your day in a graphics lab. it has its own problems.

What people say and what people do are complete opposites.

If I ask the kids at my school who wants their next computer to be a Mac, well over 50% of the kid will say yes. But when it comes time to buy a computer 75+% of the kids who said they were going to buy a mac end up with a low end PC laptop that they got on sale for $600-$700 instead.

Funny how that works. ;)

QFT

Heck, PC's outnumber people in my house 4:1 and I don't have a mac... I just wont spend that much for a computer.

Some of you should just hackintosh up a system and use osx for awhile and stop talking completely out of your ass. It's that simple.

I hated to use macs at high school as they would constantly crash although the ones using OSX would crash less often then those on OS9 they would still crash more often than Windows machines and all we would do on them was word processing. When I see Windows machines crash most of the time it was due either to user error or bad programing of the applications (not the OS's fault). I would never buy a mac and If I got one for free I would try to sell it or give it away. I don't even like the looks of the macs or that of Vista (or even XP) which is why I set my Vista machine to look like Windows 98.

A simple question - why? I do all my photoshop, encore, after effects, maya work on a widows box already.

What is so "magical" about OSX? Details please.

Cue pompous news-guy voice:

This just in: 40% of college students are fashion obsessed morons who have no idea that a decent Macbook runs $2000 while there are several reasonably powerful Windows based notebooks available for $600. When their broke asses realize this fact, 87.5% will take home a Windows based notebook instead. Thus, Mac's 5% market share will be maintained.

Also, statisticians released a study today showing that marketing studies are, on average, 90% bullshit, and when they include the one of the following words: Mac, Macbook, iPod, OSX or iMac, the ratio shoots up to 99%.

In my experience, in the technological design / education fields, the ones buying macs are the ones who know next to nothing about computers. However they are on the cutting edge of pop culture and subscribe to all the current trends ... and I think that says it all.

And a lot of the people in this forum buy their computer components to play games with. Throw stones much?

Bonus points for quoting yourself.

Don't forget to high-five all your friends when you make you next apple purchase. That was mean..you have no friends.

For every one person that takes the time to point out the painfully obvious to clueless apple fanboys there are 50 who know it's a waste of time. It's amusing for a bit but gets old fast.

I've never made an Apple purchase aside from an ipod shuffle, and don't have anything but a hackintosh. See how stupid you make yourself look?

The real funny here is that people like me can see something for what it is and what it brings to the table across the board rather than what people like you do: Reject things out of hand for no particular purpose, having never even used them.

I'm glad so many people in the world take what another's computer is to heart.
I use macs, and I'll continue to as it's what I've been successfully productive on and will continue to be. I use Windows, I use Linux, but I just don't own any of my applications for windows and I'm dedicating my linux machine to media.

I want a better operating system and I know that the only way that is going to happen is via competition. If people buy a LOT more macs, then MS will be become more competitive or lose market share.....nuff said.

Nuff said. lulz

Id say, about 25% from the people i know that are going to college. Most of them are looking for A LAPTOP not a A MAC.

75% of all statistics are made up. No seriously, I heard it from a really credible source.

Since i cant effing edit...

i meant to say 25% of the people i know that are getting laptops for college are actually saying they want macs. And i love that when ppl say that quote about all statistics being made up. ;)

Everyone I know with a macbook uses it to run Vista. Why they paid a premium for a white Asus laptop just to run Vista is byond me. But hey, it lets them look cool at Starbucks.

Way to go. Some of us purchase our Macs so that we can use OSX legally. That being said, I still don't see why you're so hung up on OSX, I'd still rather use Vista. But thanks for supporting your beloved OS by pirating it.

See you're talking about a desktop. Laptops are FAR more useful to college students and you don't have that kind of customization on a laptop either. Sure you can sort of build your own, but you are still insanely limited.

That's obviously why college students are buying them. Did uh...you go to college, by chance?

Currently a student.

Walk into the Engineering library, not a Macbook in sight. Math Library, Science, same thing. Walk into the humanities (liberal arts) library and they're everywhere. Their audience is exactly what you'd expect, those philosophy students taking the extra few years of babysitting before they have to become adults.

I've never tried shoving a pine cone up my ass either, but I'm willing to go out on a limb and assume that it's also something I should avoid.

I ask again - what is so incredible about OSX? I used it for a month when I was out town and don't see what the big deals is. Seriously, tell me. Enlighten us poor souls that don't seem to get it.
