New ipod touch...almost a PDA?

next year we will have the iNewton? heres to hoping :)

i still miss the newton lol

That is a very good question. That would be awesome if the iTouch supported AD2P stereo bluetooth. However, browsing through their page I did not see anything that eluded to that so I am going to have to say no. Plus there is no mention of bluetooth capability for any of them. That is kinda the reason that I was going to get the Samsung Blackjack but now with the iPhone being cheaper I may wait and deal with my POS Nokia for awhile. Damn you Apple and your great toys!!!

I am sure that it will have a 3rd Party app built for it shortly that will allow such thing. Would be nice to sit in bed and listen to music while IMing with my buddies.

The specs for the iphone has Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, but I have no idea about music. But it doesn't seem like there is msic through it with that A2DP thing or whatever. Some say it's there, but disabled. I just can't imagine such useful feature for a music tech gadget like an iphone missing this.

I have no intention on buying any of these devices, but I do have to say I'm excited. I don't really see the new nano design as all that bad other than the silly reversion to polished metal. I wish they would just stick to brushed aluminum, it doesn't show of scratching so easily. But I suppose that will come next year along with a doubling of storage bringing it in line with replacing my 3rd gen iPod.

The iTouch is perfect for the people that really don't need the phone part. I think the price point on it is so that it doesn't kill the iPhone for people on the fence. And the price drop to the iPhone just gives me more fodder to throw at Verizon when my contract is up in 5 months.

Officially the only bluetooth profile the iphone supports is the hands free/headset profile. There's kind of a glitch (probably the best name for it) wherein you call voicemail, and then go into the ipod and start listening to music, and it plays via your bluetooth headset/device IIRC the big problem is that once you end the call, the iphone closes the bluetooth connection.

Between all of the unofficial 3rd party development going on and the iphone eventually making its way to europe, I just don't see more bluetooth profiles not being added...

This could be the first iPod I'll actually really like. Don't get me wrong, previous iPods have been okay, in my opinion, but they've always lacked features that other companies were including for the same price, and in some cases less! I like the iPhone, but I love the idea of having all the cool stuff the iPhone has and does, without the phone part.

really really really needs wireless pc syncing, instead of that troublesome cable

That iPod touch + a calender program and I'm sold...

I might be sold anyway, have yet to make up my mind (wallets mind too...).

I used to an apple hater. The but getting to know Jobs at G5 and this is now making making me a fanboy.

this needs to have 3rd party apps as acceptable. I really need epocrates to work for this. For obvious reasons nurses are not supposed to carry phones/cameras on the floor during work.

The new ipods look sweet but i think ill stick to my sony ericsson p1i and whack an 8gb m2 memstick in it. IMO apple are rinsing you all, they are just gonna release an ipod in 6-12months time that will do everything mid-high end pda/mobiles do atm, THEY ARE BEHIND AND ARE RINSING YOU ALL, SNAP OUT OF IT!

This is what I've been waiting for, but I think I'll wait a bit more... 16gb isn't nearly enough (I have 30+gbs of music) and I wanna wait for the second generation of iPod touches. Who knows if it'll even work with my cars ipod interface.

fuck you apple, you owe me some $$ for my phone

Not to pile on, but I too cant help but feel burned for paying an extra 200 dollars for phone functionally over the new ipod touch. I am happy they have the new kickass designs and all, but 400 vs 600 seems too steep for the phone. Its only been like 1.5 months since the launch of the damned thing too.

As far as the new ipods go, Id recommend the ipod classic. 16 GB is not an improvement over 30 and 80 GB in my book. Essentially form > function in the ipod touch, cool as it may be. That being said, this is from someone with + 7000 apple lossless files :p

Ah, this is the iPod I have waited 6 years for. I have never owned one before and am getting a Touch for my B-day, well it will be a few days late but who cares. My laptop is too heavy to lug around school for the few hours I am there and we have WiFi across campus so this is really the best way to cover everything I need while at school. Sure the 16gb capacity is a bit limiting, but then again my personal library is only at 12.8 gb as of last night. I still rely on CDs for a majority of my music and am not that big of a pirate. I also keep my player I do have, 2gb iRiver Clix, rotating constantly with my choice music so really the 16gb will be an upgrade for me.

I never drank the Apple Kool-Aid until yesterday Mr. Jobs and now you have done it. This will be my first piece of Apple Hardware so wish me luck as I move over to "The Bark Side"!

I read somewhere the the touch includes small calander and contacts apps. I don't know if they're very robust or featurepacked, but they exist. 3rd party development and support is what makes or breaks these kinds of devices. and now the ipod has transcended "personal music player" to be a multifunction device

Its always been the case that anything with a half eaten apple stamped on it was going to command a hefty premium. I think it works with all the same dock connectors though.

The zune needs to implement its own store over wifi like itunes just did. Perhaps they'll take a hint and incorperate PocketIE or something to make browsing possible.

fear not, according to gizmodo the touch runs the exact same operating system as the iphone, and all of the binaries are the exact same. So it will only be a short matter of time before the touch has the apps the iphone has. (cal, mail, etc)

I'm pretty sure the last generation iPods all supported calendar and contacts, you just had to set it up. I never used it because it seemed useless on anything other than my phone. I can't imagine the iTouch not including every feature of the iPod software and then some of the applications of the iPhone.

16gb flash vs 30/80gb hdd based....

I've already ordered mine, should be here in about a month. I bought it because I needed a bigger screen to watch movies, I don't have to carry my laptop around to browse the internet at school, and its still a fine music player. I'm going from my 5.0gen 30gig to this so space will be smaller but I can learn to sync the stuff I want instead of all the songs I don't listen to.

does anyone know if it plays music through an internal speaker as well as through headphones? That would be really cool.

No internal speaker.

You realize that this would require the computer to have an 802.11b/g card, right? If your laptop had one, you'd have to connnect exclusively to your ipod. Add that along to the slow transfer speed you'll get. It doesn't make sense.

Let me preface this by saying that I have no love for Apple and do not own any of their products.

LOL, I love this current debate. Apple owes you nothing. You paid the fanboy tax. Those of you that had to have the iPhone before anybody knew this would happen, and guess what? It did. Same happens with video cards too, and we all love those.

I thought the iPhone was overpriced from the start.

Or the computer can just be on the same wireless network as you (i.e. at home networked with a router). Just like you can share files over a network to anyone with permission, without having to have a dedicated connection to that computer (hey, isn't that how the the interwebnets work?) That way you can sync to the computer from anywhere within network range. In fact, ActiveSync did have this feaure, but to the dismay of everyone who had a wireless capible PDA, Microsoft dropped it after version 3.8.

I can imagine some of these requests for wireless syncing come from either experience in this area, or being at home and not wanting to walk into a different room and plug in a cable when you could just sync it wherever you were sitting. I mean come on, itunes can stream files to tv's and stereos wirelessly, why not your ipod?

point me out a 8800 gtx that was $200 under retail 2 months after launch

Anybody read about how they removed the "add event" from the calendar in order to artificially limit it.

I used to think Apple were marketing whizzes (you could sell coal with an apple logo to their fan base) but they are going so far now they're going to get a bad reputation.

Anyhow, this is one way to bugger up your PDA huh?

This along with the loss of mail, stocks, weather, etc. are all bad for the iPod touch, but since the iPod touch runs on the same code as the iPhone. All you have to do is wait for some third party to unlock or create an install application which loads on and you can bring over the missing applications probably.

Ugh. 16gb is no good. 32 and we'll talk.

That is my big complaint. It could have been the ultimate iPod with that beautiful screen but the gimped storage spaces is very disappointing. I want a new iPod but I guess I'm going to wait. I've got a 30GB iPod Photo that still does a great job playing music but I use over 20GB on it and like carrying my whole library with me.

How much more would you guys spend to get the iPod touch with greater than 16gb of space? Say 32?

I would prefer a thicker version with a hard drive and bigger battery to handle it. I think that could have been done for $399 instead of going all flash.

hmmm... I wouldn't pay for for a 32gb flash ipod either, unless it was 445 CAD like the current one is.

I'd much rather have a HD based ipod. 15mm thick, 2x the battery capacity (1360mah) and all the touchy goodness of the 16gb letdown. Seriously, it should even be cheaper if a single 40gb platter drive is used... They're like 130$ these days for a single consumer! If Apple chose to load the OS into RAM, we could do things like web-browsing without having the HD spin up at all... A single 32gb RAM chip would be enough to load mobile safari I'm sure.

The *smallest* I was able to get a single 1/2 hour TV show (no commercials) was 122mb... That's at like 320x280px too. That number rises to 250mb at the ipod touch's native resolution. A full season of a show is around 1.5gb-3gb (13 or 26 episodes depending on show) at the smaller resolution, or literally double that at the touch native 4xx x 3xx res... That means I could fit 2-4 seasons of a single show on my ipod at any time, and have about 5gb of space (max) left for music. 5gb is around 5000 minutes of crappy music, or 2500 minutes of *good* quality 192kbps AAC encoded files.

That's just not enough apple!

Goddamn!

Hmmm...sounds like you should be buying an iPod Classic then and not be looking at the iPod Touch.

I shouldn't have to sacrifice such an awesome touchscreen and wifi connectivity to get extra HD space, when I could easily have my cake and eat it too. 2.5" screen is just about the same as 16gb when it comes to movies... Useless.

It's just Apple's stupid anorexic mantra IMO.

No, it is about Apple being a business and wanting to make money.
If they just threw out all of there cards they could sell millions of devices, but what next? Instead lets put out X number of features in this device and slowly integrate new ones, thus making people upgrade, but not forcing them to. This generates higher numbers of "total" number sold, higher profits because people are buying multiple of really the same item with slightly newer features.

Guess why I have yet to upgrade my old 20gb music iPod? I have more music than I could put on it, but so what? The new iPod Classic is great, but like you I want the large screen, yet I bought an iPhone for everyday watching and listening and will now wait to buy the iPod touch once it hits a capacity that fits my need for large storage.

apple went public saying that it won't endorse the third party development of applications, and won't go out of its way to break any native programs, but if one of its new features or improvements happen to break something, oh well.

Then again, the PSP does actively try to limit hacking, and every new update for that gets cracked within days of its release. So i wouldn't be too worried.
