btw, fertility rates in the west, and especially asia are already below replacement level.. if these actually become good enough for large chunks of guys.. we are going to need a new game plan to propagate the species.


I think the only hope is external wombs / gestation. And we can have robots raise the kids.

Its beyond the realm of possibility to hope to get the population back to a stable 1960s level, at which point the Earth was far from underpopulated at 3 billion.

Fertility rates in the West and tiny parts of East-Asia (such as Japan) are essentially stabilized, and receding so slowly as to hardly be considered getting better, as we are rapidly exhausting Earth's resources, running out of places to throw our trash, and displacing other life as evidenced by the declining health of our oceans due to overfishing. McDonalds for example has had to change the source fish of their least popular offering, the Filet-o-Fish twice now due to overfishing of once overabundant species.

Unfortunately, due to immigration though, even these isolated areas that have their population growth finally under control are still growing as migrants flood the area and simply displace the ancestral populations (like the migration of Europeans into North-America did to the native population), and these migrants continue to have too many children, particularly in Africa and the Middle-East destroying the possibility of restoring balance even in Europe and E-Asia.

The projected world population is increasing beyond sustainable levels, and is predicted to nearly hit 10 billion by 2050, meaning every man women and child is having to share less than 1/3rd of the land and resources of what was available to each person in 1960, and it will be difficult to maintain a wilderness as all of these new mouths need lumber, fresh water, farm fields, mining, etc. to maintain a good quality of life, which will translate into further encroachment into rain-forests and other habitats, which will be compounded by rising sea levels.

If the world population stopped growing today, it still wouldn't be fast enough, and we need decades of decline to restore a balance, and most models show that at a current European standard of living that the ecosystem can only sustain a population of 2 billion: http://www.worldpopulationbalance.org/3_times_sustainable
