Video acceleration in portrait orientation?

When I switch to portrait orientation, 1600x2560, many things slow down considerably. It's very annoying, and it makes some games unplayable in portrait mode. I'm using a GeForce 8800 GTS 512, with the latest drivers (197.07 - 2009.10.05).

Are there any video cards that don't have this problem?

I suppose it any ATI card that supports Eyefinity would have to be fully accelerated in portrait mode for a single monitor, right? Not only accelerated in 3D, but in 2D (DirectDraw) as well, and in GDI apps like text editing? On this GeForce, even text editing is jerky at 1600x2560 — including the text entry I'm doing right now.

What about the 4870 and 4890? Are they slow in the same way as this GeForce is at 1600x2560, seeing as they don't have Eyefinity support?

It might be because an 8800 GTS with only 512MB of memory is barely adequate to drive a 30" 2560x1600 display. Might want to look into a video card upgrade with at least 1GB of fast GDDR memory.

This situation probably justifies a 5870 imo.

that doesn't really make sense though, the resolution itself hasn't changed it just the orientation of the monitor.

my guess would be that (and it is 100% a guess) the 8800GTS is doing the "flip" in software mode and thus causeing the slow downs.. It doesn't make any sense i know but the only thing i can thing of right now. I honestly have never tried to run a game in portrait mode on a single monitor.

as far as 2d Performance goes, the 4850 i run at home has zero issues in 2d performance in potrait mode.
