has anyone compared ENB SSAO vs Nvidia AO? There is a video on youtube but I can't tell the difference.

Neenja_Jenkins:
I don't know why it is acting like that. I do know those cave textures are prone to turn black randomly due to some light sources, and all textures can turn black when there are too many light sources affecting one texture. Never saw this happen with a Bethesda cave (unless the player has a torch/light source active) so I'm not sure what's going on.

From what I've played, there isn't much of one between ENB SSAO vs. Nvidia's Quality SSAO. However, ENB SSAO also gives you the option of SSIL (Indirect Lighting) which is fairly significant. Downside is that ENB SSAO has the transparency bugs.

Getting my new video card tomorrow. I haven't used any ENB before, what's the more popular one people are using around here?

EDIT: NVM, I missed a section in the OP and some posts here.

Bummer. It is quite strange. It's almost like a black hole.

I have no mods that affect lighting or anything other than ENB.

New ENB has been released:
"New feature is "sky lighting" effect, which is fake ambient occlusion."

Can anyone suggest a bit more realistic combat mod? I'm playing on expert and I hate how the enemies absorb damage but I don't want to lower the difficulty because of principles. :p

I'm using SkyUI and also iHUD in game. Anyone else have an issue where your health bars don't move when getting hit, and also enemy health bars don't change either? Stamina bars don't move either.

I actually had this same complaint. Fights are boring, lack any sense of danger, and are altogether the worst part of Skyrim.

I downloaded Combat Damage Multiplier http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/5965
This solved most of my issues. Fights are fast and brutal now. Maybe too brutal. If you're walking down the road and get jumped by a group of bandits and you're alone, there is almost no chance of surviving the encounter without a bit of luck. Though, if you see them first, and have time to prepare, you can get the jump on them, which greatly increases your chances of survival.

Best of all, it makes dragon fights actually dangerous. Dragons are very difficult to dispatch now, and often take down as many people as they can when they go down. Yesterday, a dragon attacked outside Whiterun. I was alone so I couldn't take it head on because one smack of its firebreath would roast me. The fight lasted awhile with me running and hiding, and of course surrounding guards and people joining in the fight. Unfortunately, before the fight was over, nearly everyone who lives outside Whiterun had been an unfortunate victim. All the farms now have no owners or workers since they died in the fight. Even the poor dog that one of them owns is gone :( All-in-all, I think the dragon ended up killing 10-12 people before I went down. D:

With this mod though, you'll need uncapper too. Since things die faster, you don't get to swing or use your spells enough to skill up. So leveling is VERY slow. Uncapper fixes this though. This mod (Balanced Combat: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8377) seems to have already altered the skill gain, so you might not need uncapper, and it does basically the same thing.

If you're feeling really ballsy, install the Deadly Combat Mod (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/5485) on top of this to make enemies fight smarter, and you have game fit for a masochist.

With these mods, my Skyrim combat experience is much more visceral and exciting.

I'll go add Deadly Combat in. Be careful with Combat Damage Multiplier if it uses an esp file since it was made prior to the CK.

And this 50,000 character limit per post is very annoying.

P.S. Again, let me know if you guys want me to make new posts about what mods I add to the list or if you'd prefer if I stick with the "silent" adding method.

I like being notified in a new post that the OP has been updated. Again, thanks for the hard work dj_2004!

Also, I'm using Realistic Colors, Realistic Nights v3 mod. Any way to get SSAO/SSIL with an AMD 7870 with this mod? I read that it's not compatible with ENB. Care to provide some info on that anyone?

Alright, I will start posting newly added mods from now on. To get started, here are a few of the mods I've added during the past ~7 days:
Towns and Villages Enhanced - Riften
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20185

Seratic Armor
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19961

The Skyrim Distance Overhaul
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19446

Sneak Tools
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19447

Project Reality - Climates Of Tamriel - Weather - Lighting
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17802

Unique Booze Bottles HD
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19922

Towns and Villages Enhanced - Whiterun
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19799

Lightning during Thunder Storms Mod
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/15506

As for RCRN:
It says it is compatible with ENB but the mod was designed for it to not be used (probably because of color/lighting changes). You can try this ENB preset which should only give you ENB features - DoF, SSAO, SSIL, etc. You can choose which you want active in the enbseries.ini. This ENB preset has not been updated for ENB v.114 so download ENB v.113 instead.

Link: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17326

Thank you! I was going to ask about the vanilla ENB. I like the colors in RCRN and also the weather and day/night effects. I just wanted DoF and also SSAO.

Is unique booze bottles supplementary to SLOD Wine Cellar, or do you prefer it over SLOD?

It will very likely overwrite SLOD Wine Cellar so I'd say it isn't supplementary.

I haven't used UBB yet so I don't know the quality of it. I like the idea of unique labels and bottle colors though. :)

Edit: I wonder if you could use the textures from SLOD but the meshes and esp from UBB? I'm not sure if it even has meshes.

Edit #2: Mods added today or perhaps yesterday... I tend to forget what I add and when I add it:

Sounds of Skyrim - Civilization
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20193

Tribunal robes set
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20077

Towns and Villages Enhanced
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20185

Hi all,
Im looking for a mod that shows what armor i have equipped in an easier way, The way the UI shows it today, its too easy to accidently equip something. I didnt have my bracers equipped for a period of time and didnt even know it.

Try the categorized favorites.

Make a hotkey for what you wanna wear in certain situations, that way no worries.

I hate scrolling thru a list of crap mid battle just to put on armor.

How is this mod looking? Any conflicts or anything you've experienced?

I haven't tried it myself but on the description page it states any weather or lighting mods (not stated in the compatible list) can conflict with it. So, Realistic Lighting, RCRN, etc., are probably going to cause conflicts.

I'm waiting for another weather mod, and have been for many months:
http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1393504-help-me-come-up-with-a-good-name-for-my-weather-mod/

And since I'm posting, I added this mod today:
SHARPE Craftsmanship - Made to order
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14474

Thanks for the guide. I just picked up skyrim and looking to add some mods.

I bought the game on steam. How does modding on steam differ than modding on here?

Can I just subscribe to mods or are there any precautions I need to worry about?

Where you download your mods and what installation method is up to you.

IMO, Steam Workshop is one of the worst methods since 1. it auto-updates subscribed mods which is something that is problematic (reason is in the beginning of my Helpful Links, Tweaks, and Guides section), 2. it doesn't allow mods that use esm files or mods that are above a certain size (100MB?), and 3. there are more mods on Nexus than Workshop.

If you're new to TES modding, then I suggest using Nexus Mod Manager and their site for mods and only Workshop for Workshop exclusive mods.

Edit: Mods added today:
LIAT - Lively Inns And Taverns
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19841

Better Fast Travel - Carriages and Ships
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/15508

TES V Savegame Manager
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/15

The quest, house, and ENB sections could use more mods so please recommend the ones you enjoy.

Thanks a bunch, for someone new to modding the amount of information is a little overwhelming...

I will follow your advice and not use the workshop. I'll sign up at nexus and go from there. Yeah modding seems kinda difficult and it seemed that the workshop made it simple without making it work well.

btw, is there anything different about modding a steam version from a regular version?

Skyrim is a Steam-only game so there is no regular version unlike past TES games.

If you want simplicity, then Workshop does that well, which is partly why it has its problems. You'll still have to learn to use Nexus (whether NMM, Wrye Bash, or manual installation) for certain mods, assuming you want those mods.

Using NMM is similar to Workshop but you will have to update your mods yourself rather than having them auto-update. So, in the end, you don't seem to be losing much in terms of simplicity.

Key things to keep in mind:
1. Scripts are saved into saved games. This can very easily cause a saved game to go from crash-free fun to a burning CTD disaster that can only be fixed by loading a save before certain mods were added (or re-adding those mods that you removed). Until a save game cleaner comes along, one must be careful of what mods he installs.

2. Always run BOSS after you install the mods you want but before you go and play. This will reorder your mod list to make things more compatible and stable. I'm not sure if NMM does this automatically but Workshop, manual, and Bash installations do not.

3. Read readmes.

4. Don't go mod-crazy. Install a few, test stability, then install some more. Retextures can be installed all at once as long as your computer can handle them.

you rock. I plan do play skyrim with a controller on a 64" 1080p plasma. I have a 670gtx so I should be able to throw a few at it. I love all the city, texture, and hd packs. Probably will do those first. Then I might add a few of the weapon packs. Finally there are a few mods that change the game that seem interesting. I imagine this is where the errors come into play at. Will only do a few of those.

auto-update from workshop is a double edged sword. As far as I know, mod authors can push bad updates on you or even remove the mod.

Out of those three categories, yes, game changing mods would likely be the most volatile as they tend to include scripts and can also modify a lot of things causing possible conflicts with other mods. Texture packs may include meshes sometimes, and bad meshes cause CTD. Weapon packs seem pretty safe as I haven't seen any instability complaints.

As long as the mod you want to uninstall doesn't have certain types of scripts (I think OnUpdate scripts are one such instance) then you can usually semi-safely uninstall the mod with a clean save procedure and maybe using the mod's uninstall procedure (either a console command or in-game menu). A lot of script mods don't have their own uninstall procedures though, besides the common clean saving which can only do so much, so you still need to be careful of what you install/uninstall. Hopefully one day someone will create a save game cleaner that will solve most of these problems.

Thanks for all the tips.

I have not played the game yet. I was hopping to mod it before I play that way I dont have to worry about losing my progress in the game.

After combing through this thread and the high dl ones on nexus, these are the ones I am working with right now. Still waiting for the high res pack to dl on steam..

Any other recommendations that I should consider?

SKSE. You probably already installed it but just making sure. :)

UI Stuff:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3222
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/4929

Weapons:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1002
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14693

Oh, and I suggest more texture mods.

Those weaps look awesome. I added all four above. I also added SKSE just to be on the safe side like you recommended.

Ill browse through a few more texture mods. How do you know which one will over wrire each other?

Sometimes you don't know until you install the mods and get asked to overwrite some files. In my list I tried to include texture mods that retexture things that the large texture packs don't. For instance, 2K doesn't touch the level up/perk screen but this texture mod does: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/7308. I would list a bunch of texture mods in this post for you but everything is in my list in the Visuals category.

Then there are things like books, paper, certain clutter, insects, plants, etc. that 2K/other large texture packs don't touch.

cool nabbed both of those plus adding some more right now. Really like the mods that redo the faces to make them look more real..

More excited about the mods than the game lol....

btw, how do you update a mod through NMM? I downloaded some mods and they came outdated. i.e. the jaySuS sword mod came in the 13C version while the most current is the V13D. When I click on the new version it takes me back to nexus where I originally dl'ed it.

I don't think NMM has auto-update so you have to download the new version of the mod.

k thanks. It will only let me load one of the skyrim hd 2k textures at a time. is that normal?

So you can't activate any of the others without another deactivating itself? And why do you have SRO active when you are installing 2K? Does SRO cover some textures 2K doesn't?

Also, Tytanis pretty much conflicts with everything but texture mods. If you want a saved game that will last you a while where you can add more mods to it later, then Tytanis likely isn't the way to go. In fact, I'm not sure if it is compatible with SkyRe so you may already have a conflict occurring. This is why I didn't list Tytanis in my list.

Yeah. when I would go to install it would tell me that a different version was available and ask me if I wanted to upgrade. I got them all to install though by selecting no instead of yes. So that problem is fixed.

Removed:
SRO
Tytanis

Thanks a bunch! Anything else ;)

you my friend are awesome. I added all the above mods ;)

I also removed SkyRe since that has a lot of compatibility issues. I fired the game up and was using between 1.8 and 2.1 gbs of vram. No stuttering though.

btw the game looks beautiful! Thanks for all the help!
