No more desktop sets up, I want to go big!

So I'm done with the whole 2.1 package deals that I used to get for speakers. I have the Logitech Speaker System Z523....and I will admit they sound pretty incredible for what they are, but it's time for me to move on to bigger and better.

For my TV set up, I'm running Sony SSF-7000 speakers with Sony SA-W3000 subwoofer and Pioneer VSX-820-K receiver/amp. I'm not sure mimicking that set up on my PC is what I'm looking for or not. I'm most likely looking to run 2.1 as I did before. I'm using Creative X-Fi Titanium with no preamp as I do not need much to power my Logitech speakers. I'm unsure if I need a full on receiver or just an external amp to power the 2.1 set up I would like to do. I don't even know if floor standing speakers are the best choice for a computer set up as I would be so close to the speaker?

My goal is for crisp highs, good mid range, and deep bass. The subwoofer will obviously cover the bass, so I need to get a set of speakers to cover mids/highs which is why I was leaning towards floor standing speakers. I've seen many people with bookshelf speakers, but I can only assume it was for practical reasons such as space and money.

My budget range is probably around 600$ but if I need to go more I can probably do so. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get a relatively good 2.1 set up for my PC?

PS: I wouldn't mind 5.1, but because my back faces an open area I don't see how it's possible to place speakers behind me.

How big is your room? Would the speakers be on the desk? A floorplan would be great. Do you own your property and/or can you make modifications to the room? Are you okay with used gear?

EDIT: Without knowing the answers, here's a quick rundown:
1. Receiver: http://www.accessories4less.com/mak...YAMAHA-RX-V375-5.1-Channel-AV-Receiver/1.html ($200)
Connect it via optical or coaxial - you have an optical port on the back of the mobo (assuming you are still running the Extreme6 in your sig) $5 cord from Amazon or Monoprice
2. Speakers: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Polk-Audi...66?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item27d9a9417e (Used - ~$230)
3. Subwoofer: http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html ($385)

$815. You said you could go over a bit, so here is one option.

Room is about 18x17, I'm in the corner but facing the wall, not the corner. The speakers could either be on the desk, or on the floor. I have the room for either. I do not own the property, I'm renting a house so I cannot modify it. I'm ok with used speakers, refurbished would be even better if possible. Yes, I still have the extreme 6, but my sound card has Optical Out as well, so I would be using that.

Let me know if that changes your recommendations.

I've never used bookshelf speakers before. But if you think they are worth the money, I'll certainly give it a shot. If I use floor standing speakers I have to rearrange my set up a bit, but I'd prefer not to if I didn't have to.

I agree with this. Good options.

Floorstanding vs Bookshelf speakers don't really make much of a difference especially since you have a sub in this setup. Most floorspeakers in this price bracket won't have huge woofers in them. They'll probably have the same 5.25" - 6.5" woofer in them as the bookshelf speaker, with the added benefit of being hard to move. Also, spend a few hours playing with room designs and placement. Allow for a few hours for you to get used to the sound of the speakers and also to fiddle with crossover settings.

this is going to be audiophile sound and a rather modest budget for 2.1 brand new.

another idea Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's and that yammy adding sub later if you feel you need it... near field you may well not.

PM me if you want to sell that Logitech system.

That'll be the outcome when I get these speakers. Might be a few weeks though.

Thank you for the input, I certainly like what I see. Those Wharfedale Diamonds look incredible. It may come down to which speaker I can get cheaper, the Polk or the Wharfedale. Besides that, I have the desk space with my Galant so if I can get the same sounds out of bookshelf speakers I have no qualms with getting them and saving some space in the process.

I believe you cannot go wrong with a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 60s which are currently on sale for as low as I can ever remember..

Combine this with a receiver with some decent power and you are good to go.
