My first news thread!

Are we allowed to edit FPS posts?

Edit: Yes, we are!

Kyle - are you going to keep that ability, or take it away. Sure, it lets us live with our stupid remarks on the news stories, but it sucks when we make a mistake!

It will be taken away due to abuse. One day you will learn to proofread....or you won't. ;)

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, no matter how many times you bop them on the nose with a rolled up paper.... or whatever one would use now that news papers are a thing of the past.

I was using my Kindle, but I've killed my last 3 dogs....

Abuse? What abuse and how? And why news section only? Any dumb or troll comments the poster removed or altered should still be visible in possible replies it has yes? So why the special treatment on this section only?

*edit* All I am saying that having no edit button is a major inconvenience. Just like now I thought of adding this part to the my post after I had already posted it. :D

I typically use edit to add to my post rather than post a new one. Of course, I'm never really consistent, so I can have 3 posts in the same thread right after another, or multiple quotes in a single post, or multiple edits to change things....

What they have stated before is that it is abused due to the nature of this section vs the others. This section has much more frequent posting than most other sections and on top of that is much more opinion driven I guess you would say. The point of most of these threads is to start a discussion. If one could change their post they could start an argument and then change their post thus leading others to get in trouble. Just to screw with people even more than they do now somebody could go into a type of thread that normally leads to a heated debate and make comments to get people going and then just delete their post or change the content. Or they could make a comment to piss somebody off, then once that person goes off on them delete their original post or edit it and then report the other person stating they are being attacked. Add to this that some people (like myself) only visit this section so you don't have the same level of respect by all members that you would in the other forums where you are discussing more specialized topics. If you are normally in the video card section you are going to be discussing a focused topic with others about video cards. If you are in the networking section you are going to be discussion networking issues or designs with others interested in that topic so you are going to stay on topic a little more. Here in the wild west, you are more likely to run into people that just want to be a prick and start issues.

I like having the ability to edit stuff myself, but having helped with the administration of a forum with about 700 active users I saw a few flame wars that started and then somebody changed their post or removed it trying to claim they never said or did something. So I can understand how in some cases people would abuse something like that and ruin it for everyone else.

Again, the original message should be visible in the reply quotes, yes? And if it weren't all it would take is add an time limit how long you have to edit before the post gets locked down. Say, 5 minutes. That is a long enough time to spot any typos (no matter how well you proof read, brainfarts happen and you always spot them after posting) and add some afterthoughts but short enough that it should render any editing related trolling attempts near impossible. I know this system possible because I think (unless my memory fails) Headcase forums had such in all forum sections and ultimate-guitar.com definetly has such in their news comments section.

Especially since a lot of us post on here from our phones or mobile device. Sometimes you're just gonna miss something that auto correct did and makes you look like an idiot. Especially if it's a pretty wordy post it's not as easy to proof read pm a 5" smart phone screen as it is on a 27" monitor.

Perhaps a trial to see if we can not abuse it? It's been many years and I would wager most of the active posters have matured a bit over the years. Just a thought.

That is exactly what is going on now, so I am not sure what you are asking for. I just tested it above and is working fine for edits.

Quality post, OP.

I propose PornoSatan be the new Front Page News Bitch.

In case things go south is the time limited the edit function, which I talked about above, possible to add into this forum section?
I have no idea what you are asking me.

After you have made a post in a thread you have a time limit where the post remains editable. 5 minutes for example. After the time limit has expired the post is as it is and you can no longer edit it. I have seen this kind of system for example in Ultimate-Guitar.com sites news comment section. Is such system possible in this forum? I was just wondering if that is a possibility instead of disabling the post editing completely if we are unable to behave here.

Yes, we have that ability.
