Just don't be half ass. You can probably do better than 90% of the prebuilt subs if you choose your components right. It doesn't have to be expensive either.

I dunno, according to Dan the head honcho from Adire audio ( yeah i built two DIY subs). Box volume matter not somewhat and they don't have to be exact. Bracing is more important he said and my sub boxes don't rattle. they are rock solid with no leaks. Either one of my DIY will crack the foundation of my house and give you a heartattack.
